Timing pins B230 900

I'm replacing the timing belt & seals and when I remove the gears, the idler gear alignment pin falls out in two pieces. Upon inspection, the cam pin is semi-crushed. Guess that what 350K miles will do to a 5mm pin.
The pin seems to be specially made as it is a multiple coiled pin of many layers which I assume is spec'd to minimize bent pins. Would a standard roll pin suffice? Has anyone used a std. pin or do I need to trek in to the stealership to order the Volvo part. I'm assuming the engineers spec'd a multi-coiled pin for a reason.

You mean the cold rolled steel pins that secure alignment of the overhead cam and intermediate cam to their respective cam shafts?

iPd and others may still, or offered, a solid pin to replace the rolled steel pins as a more secure replacement.

Search iPd and R-Sport International (www.r-sportinternational.com) as they may offer these upgrades.

It also helps to use the Volvo counterhold tools to lock the timing belt gears in place as you remove the center retaining bolt. Same is true when removing and replacing the center bolt of the harmonic balancer crank shaft pulley.

Hope that helps.

Sorry for this late response.

My cam roll pin failed in a 1993 Rex Regina, maybe 8-10 years ago. Tried to figure out why the car wouldn't start for several weeks, no compression and turned to the Brickboard for help. I found a standard single-roll pin on short notice and used it. I think its stronger than the thinner OEM multi-roll pin, no facts or specifications though.

Maybe more important than the roll pin design is making sure to use the full specified torque on the pulley mounting bolts.

Tom

I just removed the two roll pins from a 240 with 335K. They look much like they did new, I suppose, except for the fresh marks from the vise grip plier I used to grab them. Certainly you can have them if you want.

I used a quality steel drill bit cut to size.

Yeah, was thinking the same thing. Don't like the idea that there isn't any spring to the drill bit but beggars can't be choosers.
