960 performance enhancements? 900 1997

I'd like to get some more horsepower from the engine in the 97 960. Has anyone tried a different cam setup or electronic changes to get a boost in HP? I am not thinking of adding a turbo.

I have a late model Buick with the V-6 that has much more low end torque than the Volvo, but it certainly isn't the road machine that the Volvo is.

I've thought about replacing the inline six with a V-6 Ford engine of around 300 HP, but would like to look at other options with the original engine first.

Regards,

There isn't really anything out there that I know about anyway. FWIW I hear an LS swap is a lot more doable than a Ford but don't have 1st hand experience.

The transmission tunnel is the problem with putting a Chevy in there with an automatic, but I suppose a manual would work if pedals were hung. I like the idea of a peppy v-6 over the inline, especially one producing its HP at a lower RPM range. There's also a blower option for the Ford which would pick it up even more.

      Regards,

Paul Newman had a 960 wagon that he modified with a small block Ford. I believe it was also supercharged. The car exists to this day and was featured on Chasing Classic Cars on Velocity TV.
