Might need to replace rear end on my 72 145E wagon 4spd. Does anyone know exactly which other year cars DIFF will work? Jeep? other volvos? p.s. is stock diff a Dana 30? THX!

Just be aware that all Dana 30 differentials are not the same. The Dana 30 used in most of the non Volvo applications won't necessarily work, even if you are just looking at transplanting guts. A Dana 30 rebuild does require access to some special tools, so a complete transplant is tempting if you can find a good donor.

Even if you do a complete rear end transplant from a donor 140, aside from the trailing arm length issue that has been mentioned, watch out for the difference in yoke size. Some of the 140 E models have a larger diameter driveshaft with larger yokes for the U joints. I think the spline on the pinion is the same for both yoke sizes; but, that is something that you would want to check before getting a diff from a car with a large driveshaft if yours has the more common small driveshaft.

Ratios vary between other options such as transmissions. Wagons, I think, have higher gears, so if you use a sedan rear, you'll have slightly more relaxed highway cruising, but your speedometer will be off.

Are you planning to change the suspension components too? If so, you want to stick with '71-(yes, I believe) '73. '74 is a maybe.

Pre-'71 cars have shorter suspension arms, which locate the differential about 1" forward of where yours is. I prefer the later arrangement. Also, your driveshaft is too long for the earlier type.

And yes, you have a Dana 30. Largely the same as most, with, I believe, the exception of the way the axles are held in. Easiest though, is to simply replace the whole thing, disc to disc, with a unit from a donor car.

What makes you think you need to replace? They are pretty bullet-proof (figuratively and literally :) ) as long as they don't go dry.

dunno what the problem is yet, but i agree never heard of any dana rear goin bad. It has 240 spring set up on it now. thought maybe other cars (like Jeep or dodge) with these dana 30 would be a direct bolt up but i guess not ey? looking like ill have to rebuild the one i have (if it comes to that) due to there prolly isnt many around new england.

If you select another 140 series rear end, the easiest swap will be a '71 or '72. I think a '73 or later is a direct swap - but not 100% sure.
