re: 93 245 auto - removing steering U joints 200 1993

Hi All,

I am not so lucky with removing the steering U joints. I was banging it for hours and it wouldn't budge. :( What am I doing wrong? I am using a large screw drive and a hammer, hammering from the bottom. Thank you as always.

Redwood chair is right about removing the bolts completely.

There is a groove cut around through the the splines that the bolts diameter fits across.
    Leave the wedge in place.

The aluminum and steel might have a love affair going on so use a little a little of ex-boyfriend to help penetrate their bond.

You will have to drop the rack in order to get it to clear the apparatus. The weight will help.
Don't drive upwards to hard, there is a collapsible column up there.

You need to align these going back up in there too.

Keep your steering wheel straight and as tight as you can. The play tweaks with the straight ahead alignment.

Set the end rods out the same from each of the new rack housing as the old rack was. Measure from a center line drawn on the racks housing with a tape measure.
This should put you within one tooth on the spline dead on or off.
It will make up for less adjusting for the toe setting.

The rack housing give you no place to go left or right as it is pinned into frame of the car.

Those lines come apart easy enough because they are lubed from power steering fluid but be careful upon putting them back in and don't strip the threads. They are aluminum in the housing of course.

      clarification 200 1993

      Hi All,

Both bolts are out along with pins. I soaked with PB blast for at least 1 month.

I know I am dumb but not that dumber. After hours of banging, I realized that I didn't have to do this in order to remove the engine. I was tired, I guess. hahaha

        clarification 200 1993

Just did this job the other week on a '89 245. I soaked the old steering coupler for 2 days with penetrating with really no results here in the rust belt of America. Pounding with the bolts out and ...nothin' doin'. Einstein here had the idea of getting the Sawzall out and ***very carefully*** cut the aluminum u- from the top and "then" pounded the upper portion up whilst the bottom was a bit more stubborn. I did prevail in this matter though.

You need to take the pinch bolts out.

Remove both pinch bolts. Use the screwdriver to widen the "splits" -- just a tad. Now you should be able to get the u-joint to slide up. -- Dave

You guys must be awfully sharp examining pictures. How can you tell SB left the bolt in there?

Your right Art, we thought... we had sharp eyes!

Studying it a little longer, I can see that the end of the upper fork shining at me.

His next picture sure looks like he has darn near split that thing in half!

That end did look more like a rounded head of a pin with the opposite side nut or a cotter pin missing.

Been quite awhile since I exchanged racks.

Now I read he was pulling the engine. What a surprise for me as well.

I hope he gets some rest before he finds a torch! (:0)

Agreed. Sometimes a timeout is necessary. Often it is a good idea to sleep on it.

It is generally a bad idea to set a time limit on accomplishing something you haven't done before. The "measure twice, cut once" principle comes to mind.

re: 93 245 auto - removing steering U joints - READ THE FAQ!!! a lot of stuff applies to 240s and other models as well!!! 200 1993

          A lot of people do.

BTW - The highlight of my Volvo life occurred when I saw my alternative u-joint removal in the FAQ!

UM, maybe buying a '96 855R actually topped that!
