Heater fan continues to run even in off position 200

Just picked up a 1990 245. This is my third wagon and 6th 240 overall. I have been going thru and refurbing and fixing all the little things that have been neglected.

One of the last things I need to address is the fan continues blowing even if switch is off, AC off. I don't recall that my other 240's had this issue.

Anybody got any ideas?

thanks
KRC

Dylan's answer is the correct one. I will add, that if you use some muscle to shut off the AC knob and it still runs, the microswitch on the back of the thermostat might be broken.

A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender says, "I'll serve you, but don't start anything."

I don't have the rotary switch, I have the toggle switch.

        KRC,

Onkel Udo is correct; your car did not come with the toggle switch. So, if this is one of the last things you need to do to erase all the niggling problems inherited from the PO, you will need to find the error in how someone did the thermostat elimination in your car. It sounds like it was just a minor error, if you are happy with the AC, but an error nonetheless. The running of the fan in low speed should only occur with the AC set to on.

Using the fan switch in an undefined position will be a useful workaround, but I think I detect a perfectionist tone in your approach to your new 240. The wiring diagrams and info are all in the link I pasted previously. Post back if you want help troubleshooting this.

Those of us who spent our allowance at the five and dime think we are getting a bargain at the dollar store.

I am a bit of a perfectionist, but I am happy with the AC such as it is (cool not cold but I live in Alabama after all). I will try to figure out how the switch got there. Could it possibly be an end of year model that ended up with a 91 switch?

It would have to be more than just the thermostat vs. switch. If you post the VIN I can look it up by chassis number.

I went to buy some camouflage trousers the other day but I couldn't find any.

Your '90 was built after about 75% of the '90s left the plant and should have the older style TXV AC, which you can normally identify by the receiver/dryer at the very front of the engine compartment next to the radiator instead of the large GM type shiny aluminum accumulator on the firewall under the wiper motor used in 91+ with the clutch cycling system. According to the parts fiche the cutoff was at the model year end.

If you do indeed have the 91+ system, and not just its snowflake switch, you are the benefactor of a desirable upgrade. I know of at least one person who makes a habit of doing those swaps -- not a trivial matter, but very effective in a climate like yours, especially for a wagon.

Here are a couple pics which explain the difference as viewed toward the firewall. First pic is a -90 and the second is 91-.

It's always darkest before dawn. So if you're going to steal your neighbor's newspaper, that's the time to do it.

Got to the bottom of it, sort of. One of the previous owners buried the Ac switch inside the dash (with knob at max) and installed the snowflake switch so you get an all or none when you use the snowflake switch. It is a jury-rig but it works. I've got to decide whether just to leave alone or restore to original function.

                  Thank you for the photos.

It appears as if I have the old style so no I am really stumped. I have not had time to look into it properly but when I do I will post something.

I'd double check that the AC is, indeed, ALL the way off. Even if it's just a hair clockwise, it can be enough to keep the fan running.

The system keeps the fan on the low speed when the AC is on to keep the evaporator from freezing up.

To be sure, I suppose you could disconnect the AC switch to see if it makes a difference.

    Hi

My first thought was the PO has bypassed the switch because it is bad!

If it is bad, it failed in that one position, unless you have speed control?

What speed does it run on?

    Phil
