Dear hf63,
Hope you're well. Salvage yards drain all liquids (gasoline, oil, window washer fluid, coolant, trans fluid, brake fluid, etc.). You don't need to drain the gasoline.
I presume you'll not do this in a garage. Draining a gas tank should be done in "open air". Have someone nearby to make sure that no one approaches carrying a cigarette, etc.
As the fuel tank is nearly full, you'll likely need four five-gallon containers. Position them side-by-side.
Raise the car and put a container underneath. Loosen the hex fuel line fitting and push the fitting backwards (along the fuel pipe). You'll need a drain hose large enough to go over the flared end of the fuel pipe (1/2" internal diameter should suffice).
Put the drain hose into the first container. Pull the fuel pipe free of the filter and quickly slide the drain hose over the end of the fuel pipe. Then, remove the gas tank filler cap. The fuel should drain pretty quickly.
Once the first container is close to being filled, ask your helper to replace the fuel tank filler cap. That should slow the flow of fuel. Shift the hose to the second container, and then ask that the fuel tank filler cap be removed.
Hope this helps.
Yours faithfully,
Spook
