Lost 1&2 gear on '93 Classic 240 wagon

My wife had been driving the Classic exclusively while I was out of town for an extended period, and I had planned to service the transmission fluid. Well, now I returned and she drove it and it lost 1 and 2 gear. It feels the same way a clutch doesn't catch in a manual. In drive, the car moves forward, but upon depressing the gas pedal, it doesn't "catch" but moves very slowly even at high RPMs.

Any quick ideas as to what it might be - I suspect I lost the transmission, but wonder if there may be an electrical problem?

Any thoughts appreciated.

Sounds like the linkage is screwed up. I had the same symptoms when I took the valve body out to fiddle with the transmission and forgot to reconnect the shift linkage to the piston inside that controls the gear. Look under the car while your wife moves between gears and observe the linkage (car not running, for safety).

Aside from any obvious linkage or fluid level problems I'm afraid you have real transmission "issues". There's no electronics or electrical issues that would cause your problem. Look for coolant in the fluid and vice-versa--leakage into the trans oil cooler section of the radiator can be deadly to the automatic. -- Dave
