Fan blades hitting shroud AFTER engine mount replacement

Hello All,

I have a 1986 244 that had some engine mounts that completely split in half. I replaced them over the weekend with some part store parts. I figured these 8 dollar mounts would get me through until my Tasca order was received. Before the replacement, my fan did not contact the shroud. After replacement, it doesn't contact at idle, but during heavy acceleration, shifting, and on a rare occasion braking the fan ever so slightly hits the shroud. The sound is extremely annoying. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix it for the near term until my parts come in?

never heard of it before on a Volvo I've replaced 100 or so of them over the years, using oe and other brands. only guess is, they are the wrong part for the car or made wrong. what brand? good luck, chuck.

Or the tranny mount is completely shot and sagging enough to angle the motor up more now that the new engine mounts are in place.

I thought about that. It does hit at the top left of the shroud if viewed from the driver's seat. I bought Anchor brand mounts, which are made in India. They actually looked very well built when I took them out of the box. They carry a limited lifetime, as well which I know is not the same as a regular lifetime but the manager has always honored the parts warranty well past their wear date. I did order a HD mount from IPD for the transmission, but I can order the Anchor equivalent for 8 bucks and have it in the morning. I guess it is worth a shot. It just puzzles me that with new mounts it would do that, but I suspected the transmission mount was busted as it has always had a vibration in the shifter. How much space should I have between the fan and shroud on the battery side? I currently have about an 1/8 of an inch while at idle, but upon acceleration it will rub slightly.

          Hi SwedeSpeedBrick,

FYI. I have 3/4" gap on the battery side/driver side & 1" gap on the passenger side. I can't measure the top or bottom.

How is your radiator rubber support on the bottom? & top?

Good point. I am sure my uppers have seen better days. I have no idea about the lowers. Can you order new ones? I don't think I have seen them anywhere for sale. I would have to see what the boneyard has I guess. I am actually starting to think the rubbing sound is more transmission movement because of a bad mount than the fan hitting the shroud. I planned on replacing the transmission mount this weekend, so I will report back with my findings.

              Hi SwedeSpeedBrick,

I called the Volvoville part guys in Long Island, NY. The part number is 463304. It's $11.99 per piece and shows the same number for top and bottom.

I hope you can find them at a car junk yard if the mounts are the problems. Good luck.

It has been a while since I owned a 240 so I cannot say for sure but 1/8-1/4" about all you see for most mechanical fans (which you rarely see at all anymore).
