1993 244 taillights: part no's needed 200

Hi,

Looking to buy Genuine Volvo (Valeo / Cibie) taillights for my '93 Classic sedan. The original ones have served well, but are tired.

My car has the rear fog light in the driver's side taillight (I've assumed all '86-'93 244s have this, too). But what is the part no. for this assembly and its counterpart (passenger side)?

Secondly, do the assemblies include circuit cards, bulb holders, bulbs and body gaskets?

Thank you.

Some Volvo 1993 PNs for you and other stuff .... 200

We wish Cibie made taillights for Volvo 240. Valeo came later. Somehow they are one in the same and yet not.

How are they 'tired'? I've pulled dozens of these form boneyard since the 1980s. Clean them up. Some UV-reistant Goop, (RV or Marine). Clean the circuit boards. Maybe drill holes at the lower row of reflector chambers that fill with water when it rains, and there you go.

The Cibie's were found on 240s up to the mid or late 1980s. There were a much more more rugged design with a heavier black reflector body, with the four studs better anchored in the black reflector body material. The lens color seems also better with the red a deeper red than the more orange Valeos.

They could all suffer with rainwater collecting in the reflector chambers.

The six-panel wrap around taillights are the worst. And Valeo make them worser (a word? Opera v 12.17 does not flag 'worser').

These taillights also have the flexible circuit board. You want the 1985 Volvo 240 taillights as they use a double filament bulb (1157? or ) for the lower, outer parking / brake lamp combination.

Anyhoo, crazy driving, or PM, you could easily search for these Volvo 240 taillights using Google. Yet, as Jan Wilsgaard, Volvo 240 designer, whom passed away recently, designed the taillights for 240, so, here goes.

iPd USA have these in black and silver (chrome) trim for 80-90$ These taillights, so far as I know, are assembled in Estonia. Early incarnations use butyl rubber to adhere the lens to the reflector body. Later (current) versions may use an annealing adhesive.

Volvo OEM, includes gaskets, the flexi-pain-in-everyone's-arse circuit boards, I believe the bulb holders, and possibly lamps.

After market includes all except lamps. The after market bulb holder are not so good.

White bulb holder is the lower, outer red lens for parking lamp / brake lamp combo. Black bulb holder on left. As stated in your 1993 Volvo 240 owner manual.

Using after market Volvo 240 taillights usually come to disappointment in some years. Shorter if parked outdoors, like my 240s remain so.

No, the 700 taillights won't fit.

The collection has only grown since I recorded this image in 2010 in Slumkane Valley, WA.

Another pair for repair. Red lens available on eBay (I hope).

Even Uncle Art was lamenting the rain and Volvo 240 tail lights. I finally relented and drilled three 1/8" or smaller holes.

With new tailights, the tail light connector is not new, and may need a cleaning and crimp.

DeoxIT?

'Cause Uncle Art just rolls this way:

I'm sorry that I do not have the part numbers at hand, just a point of view.

From my last experience buying OE Volvo taillights from TASCA about 4 years ago, I would hesitate to do it again.

Both taillight assemblies were defective because a few of the lenses were quite a bit out of kilter. Because I was paying a premium for them, they were returned for exchange. The replacements were no better and were returned for a refund.

At that point, I gave up trying to get first quality goods from Volvo - I ended up buying the made-in-Estonia knockoffs.

Over time, the knockoffs required swapping out all the lamp holders and lamps to get them to cook reliably without provoking the bulb failure light. Also, two of the mounting studs eventually needed some love when their mounting bosses queefed out.

I would have much rather run with OE Volvo taillight assemblies, but as I said before, at the price Volvo gets for them, they had better be first quality.

Shame to hear that, I ordered a Volvo tail light for my sedan several years back and it was/is as good as the original equipment.

Suggestion: Use the aftermarket plastic and switch to LED bulbs for low heat (the heat is what kills them, usually).
