alternator 900

Thanks guys for the response, another question

I saw on a video that in some cars if the dash board light for the battery is not working that the alternator might not also work.
Our light does not come on with you turn on the key.
Is this possible on a Volvo 940, and if so how hard it it to get the light fixed.
Charged the battery 12.7 volts and started car put tester showed 11.79 and I revved the engine and it stayed at 11.79 volts
Battery holds a charge, tested for drain on battery and did not find one.
Alternator was replaced by PO 11/11 and battery replaced 1/13
Owned car for 9 months

Sorry group but the newest Volvo I work on is a 1973 ES

Don't forget there is the failing idiot light issue with 940 instrument clusters, i.e the bulb holder solder joints crack and fail. So there is the possibility that the charging system is OK, but the idiot light doesn't work. On the other hand, the light failed on my mother's 940 and she didn't know the alternator had died, resulting in a mid intersection breakdown (with no accident). Resoldering the solder joints fixes this issue. A quick search should show more info.
I'd still test the charging system.
FAQ link is in the upper left of of the webpage by the "BB" symbol.

    Good luck.

    Hi,

Yes it is possible on a 940. The alternator needs this exciter voltage to start charging. No "battery" dashboard light could be due to as simple as burned-out bulb to more involving issues.

Here's the FAQ on this troubleshooting:
