Limiting straps 444-544

I'm looking for a good PV like I had many, many years ago. Recently, I came upon a '57 444 (like I had back then) in pretty good shape but when we put it on a lift, wheels suspended, I noticed that both limiting straps were broken. Everything else appeared OK & driving felt normal. What damage was done, if any, by running with broken limiting straps? Thanks.

Cal

I'm with Patrick - it's unlikely that anything other than *maybe* the rear shocks would be damaged. Unlike some of the other Volvo models, the PV's rear springs are secured at both ends. This means that even without the limiting straps, that the axle can't depart the car.

I've seen several PVs with broken straps and haven't seen any resulting damage. And I've seen several PVs with no straps at all.

Worst case: you spend a few bucks for new shocks and a pair of limiting straps. I wouldn't let this be a factor in my decision on whether or not to purchase.

$15 a pair from VP. They are listed as being the same as for the Amazon Wagon so all of the usual suspects should have them. Worthwhile for peace of mind.

Thanks for all your comments, folk. I'm waiting his paint job, door handles repair, headliner replacement, fuel delivery cleanout & tuneup estimate before going any further with this one. Other than this it seems like it may be a winner.

If they didn't go rallying you will probably be fine. I have made perfectly good limiting straps with appropriately sized tie down straps (doubled). I think older shocks were more prone to damage if over extended, newer shocks are often the only limiting rear ends have these days. SO for me no rear straps would not be a deal breaker. if you want you can check for drive train damage (this could occur if you went off roading and applied torque at full extension....very unlikely)...pretty quiet on the brickboard these days.... new set of shocks wont set you back much and new shocks are always a nice treat.
