Airbag module 900

I have a 1993 940 non-turbo, and the SRS light came on just recently. Code sleuthing suggests 'crash module' under seat is at fault. Am attempting to find replacement, as the code is not clearable. Volvo number is 3544162 and corresponding Bosch number is 0285 001 042. Both numbers seem unique to this model and year. Does anyone know of interchangeability of this module with other, more-common modules? The 93 has only the driver-side airbag.

Thanks.

    Hi,

Try cleaning the electrical contacts to the module first before looking for replacement. Oxidation on the contacts may trigger the code. Do this after taking all the precautions to discharge the airbag's module which is to disconnect batt for 20 mins.

    Regards,
    Amarin.

      Dear amarin,

Hope you're well. SRS component contacts are gold- or nickel-plated, doubtless to stop corrosion. I inspected a spare SRS module - and its wiring harness - from a '93 940. The contacts are so bright and shiny that I'm sure they're gold- and nickel-plated.

      To your warning, I'd add:
DEATH DANGER WARNING: Before accessing the SRS sensor - affixed to the floor pna, under the driver's seat - remove the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal, and put the clamp in a plastic bag, to isolate it.

This cuts power supply to the SRS (Airbag) System. Wait at least 20 minutes. If the SRS sensor is banged - if you drop the seat on it, or drop a tool on it - the airbag could deploy. This can be lethal, at close quarters. It will also be costly: a new sensor is about $1,100. A new airbag is about the same.

      Hope this helps.

      Yours faithfully,

      Spook

    Dear yenna,

Hope you're well. The updated part number for the SRS module for a '93 940 is #9148792. This item will cost about $1,100 at a Volvo dealer. This part was also used in 1993 960s.

Before seeking a replacement SRS module, try the following. Making sure you have the radio security code, disconnect the negative battery cable clamp from the negative battery terminal. This cuts all power to the car and normally clears an SRS light, that comes on as a result of a transient condition, i.e., a power fluctuation.

Wait 20 minutes. Drive the car for a few miles. If the SRS light does not come on, you've cleared the fault.

If the SRS light does come on, repeat the procedure above. If, after two repetitions - a total of three disconnects - the SRS light stays on, then the module likely is bad.

Try to find one in a salvage yard. See cautions about working on the SRS system. Be sure to cut all electrical power, before working on the SRS system.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I would try to reset the code first to see if it comes back again. Those modules are expensive!
