940 Turbo,starts and dies 900 1993

Greetings, both of the 940's are down. I haven't gotten the speedo to work on this one yet and now I have another issue. The car will start then die. It will rev a bit if you give it some throttle then fall flat on it's face. I went out today and it started up,drove it around the yard a bit,but the check engine light is on ,not the service reminder but the actual check engine. I do not want my daughter driving it until I'm sure I have isolated the issue.

Check the codes. Check the codes. Check the codes.

It's in the FAQ.

Dear jays69bird,

Hope you're well. When was the RPM (crankshaft) sensor last changed? The sensor is mounted in the transmission bell housing, just behind the engine. See the FAQs for the replacement procedure.

Crank sensor failure usually results from deterioration of the sensor wires' insulation sheath. If the wires touch each other - or if moisture gets to the wires - the sensor's signal is lost and the fuel pump shuts down.

Throttle Position Sensor failure are far less common than are crank sensor failures. I'd replace the RPM sensor, and see if that cures the problem.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook

Thanks Spook, like I said it did start but it is likely it will fail on the road again. So I will look at replacing the sensor. The good news is I got my 940 base running again. That one had jumped cam timing.

"That one had jumped cam timing."

Do your best to identify why. Normally, it is failing tension or failure to re-tension after a new belt install and 500 or so miles. It could also be the wrong style of belt used for the year or a distant chance that the crank pulley is not installed correctly.

i suspect the second code....tps is secondarily hit because the crank sensor signal is intermittent and confuses the ecu.

check and likely replace the crank sensor
