I agree with the others on here .
You will get a better rebuild from a shop that you go eye to eye with. They are standing there relying on their craftsmenship to keep them in business.
With that said, they can still get cheap by putting in knock off components. Both type companies will get the rebuild out of any warranty they provide.
So where do you go with this? Two ways. Do it yourself or have them show you their wares they work with. You want copper filled Bosch regulator brushes.
Look and see what they use to rebuild your alternator. Have them show you those.
They will have a little tiny symbol impressed into them if their Bosch. But any copper ones work. You don't want plain carbon black. The good ones run about a $.50 to a buck apiece. Depending on their suppliers. My guy buys bulk! Same with bearings.
Consider buying those items from them. It is the best option and I use that one. Most fellows on here do this. That is why we are in the know! (:-)
Now, it sounds like you have a monstrous amount of miles on this unit or not?
At 300k the rotor's slip rings maybe worn down to far and need to be replaced. That requires a set of slip rings or parts Kit. Let alone the lathe.
If you remove the regulator set you can inspect the rings inside there. So can they, right there on the counter! They will give you a price close to the going rate but you will know what you are getting.
I have seen them offered on the Internet but I personally have never machined the old ones off.
I have never replaced bearings in these before but that's not anything to do in house.
I am considering doing the rings, for the experience or fun! I have one benched with lots of miles.
Then again, I will go and talk to my favorite local shop to get the parts and most of all, their advice.
He has sold me diodes and brush sets over the years for other kinds of alternator's.
I give experienced dudes their due!
