Odometer lubrication, can it be done ? 200 1982

My 1982 odometer failed last week. It has 420k km and is original. I beleive a friend whom I loaned the car has pushed the odometer reset while driving. I reset the odometer counter myself while stopped, every time I put gas.

Has anyone used some kind of lubricant compatible with nylon or plastic ?

I have repaired the split 18 teet nylon gear with metal rings each sides. Although the gear is very tight on shaft it does slip when bottom counter changes from 0.9 to 1.0 or 9.9 to 10.0 km. This makes me beleive that bottom counter may be damaged or could be helped with a little lubricant.

"I have repaired the split 18 teet nylon gear with metal rings each sides."
I sliced "O" rings from some rubber tubing (windshield washer?) and put them on the gear's "shoulders".

Try a drop of Loctite on the gear-shaft.

I took the odometer apart this afternoon. I had a replacement ready which I adjusted with the defective meter reading.

I removed the gear still very tight, and found the problem by turning by hand the gear shaft using a vinyl tubing as an extension. The counter will jam every 1, 10, 20 or so km. I am afraid I will not repair unless I need it because that involves removing the speed needle and the large round black plate among other things.

I liked the previous odometer because the white tenth of a kilometer wheel was really white while the one I put in now is more like very smoked white.

Thanks for the Loctite trick.
