Air vents not operating as should 200 1983

Happy Fourth of July to all,

I noticed a couple of years ago that the defrost mode
was not optimal, it took longer than usual to finish the
task. The front windshield's vents were not opening up.

This summer I had my R12 converted to R132 and
now I would like to fix the vent problem.

1) Floor vents not closing completely when commanded to do so.
I can see and hear the flapper opening and then partially closing when the button is pushed and unpushed, but does not close all the way.
Can be closed completely manually, but upon acceleration they open themselves up.

Any and all help is appreciated,

Thank you,
Joseph in New Mexico in the 90's today.

Check the check valve on the engine side of the firewall (original looks like an Oreo). It should only pass air one way.

If that is not your issue check the air director vac hoses on the back side of the panel. The ends often become cracked so trimming a 1/4" can often restore function but do not bet on it lasting and plan to eventually replace the line.

If none of those work it starts to get more involved but I have only seen it not be one of those two maybe once in 28 years.

      Hi Onkel,
I just tested the check valve, it blow freely
towards the engine and closes when blown towards
      the firewall.

As for the air director vac hoses where
      are they on what panel?

      Thanks for your help,

The three buttons: recirc, defrost and floor. That is the air director. It is 100% vac operated switches that move three doors using vac servos. The rubber lines are not 31 years old and prone to splitting at the ends.

It has been years since I pulled one out but It was rather simple if memory serves.

Great thanks. I just came back from an errand
and it seems to be working correctly now. I guess
that removing and checking the check valve seemed to
get it to work again. It looks like the original
check valve, so next time at the pull & pay I
          will get a newer one.

          Thanks for your help.

Checks the ends of the hoses on the check valve it is likely that one is cracked and that re-installing the valve pushed it further up on the hose...this is unlikely to last. Trim them and plan to at least replace the engine sidehose as it is stupid easy and like $5.
