timing belt snaps 900

Hi,

Is a 1994 940 engine dead if the the timing belt snaps?

Gus

As usual Art is right on the money. It is a non-interference engine, so no damage done. Just curious how many miles on the belt when it snapped"

      Hi,

Thanks for your prompt responses. So far I have removed all the covers and tomorrow my new timing belt will be in.

As for how many miles or time before the last belt change, I am unsure. I have lost track of mileage, because the instrument cluster has been changed at least twice and could use another one. Something always fails and I just put another used one in. Don't remember when I had it changed either, but so far the job is much easier than I expected.

This is only a temporary change due to the plastic timing belt covers are in bad condition. I will reorder a new belt and covers later this summer when I change the head gasket.

Oddly enough, the t-belt failed on my daughter's 93 about an hour after posting that. I did not have a round-tooth belt here, so she got one at Autozone, and I just came back from changing it on the roadside using flashlights about 20 miles from here. Did not snap, but just stripped off about 10 teeth under the crank pulley like I see them do. Good for another 100K now.

She's only had this 93 for a year, so I am certain we know nothing about the mileage on the belt.

A thief broke into the local police station and stole all the toilets and urinals, leaving no clues. A spokesperson was quoted as saying, "We have absolutely nothing to go on."

        Art,

We had a 240 that stripped the teeth off under the crank because the cam bearings froze up. Did the cam spin OK when you were putting it back together? Of course it had cooled down by then.....

A warped head will bind the cam shaft. Important to check the tensioner as well. The stress this causes on the belt will also leave burn marks and belt residue on the tensioner.
I have to confess... When this happened to me I had the machine shop hone out the cam bearings until the cam turned freely.

I think you are lucky and it will have a long life ahead if you just replace the belt.

A famous Viking explorer returned home from a voyage and found his name missing from the town register. His wife insisted on complaining to the local civic official who apologized profusely saying, "I must have taken Leif off my census."

... And reset the timing belt tension recurringly .... 900 1994

... as the new timing belt stretches more when new to a point.

So, release and tighten the tensioner pulley several times in the first 1000 miles or so, and every oil change, or at least several times a year.

Your Volvo 240 service manual and the 700-900-90 FAQ do contain this procedure to both replace and reset teh timing belt tension.

And you want a NEW tensioner if the belt broke.

The round tooth belt has a 100,000 miles service life like the timing belt tensioner, so replace both.

      And reset the tension!

      cheers,

      Duffed.
