Knocking when shifting gears, usually means to us, that the sound is coming from the transmission. This might even be felt through the shift handle.
First thing is to check clutch adjustments.
When you mention torque rod bushings, you are now talking that the noise or clunk is from the rear.
More likely than not is bushings in the lower trailing arms underneath the axle.
The torque rod arm keeps the axle from rotating. It is mounted on top of the axle and up to the frame more forward on each side.
The main bushings that are responsible for really holding things together. They are referred to as "TABS" under search sections.
Trailing Arm Bushings. "S" must mean, there are two of them?
If it's these and it's every shift they must be really shot or the universal joints are about to go!
If you step on the gas hard an let off abruptly, they will clunk! Vibration may be there but you are use to it!
Now if they go, that will really wake you up! Especially, if they go at speed. Even just twenty miles per hour can beat the bottom of the car before it stops!
Luckily, I have only seen dropped drive shafts from vehicles while passing by them.
Trust me, they look better when dropped by hands and arms!
