Rusting Fuel Pipes 900

I was under my 95 944 today and found that the salt belt corrosion has taken a big toll on my fuel pipes from the tank to the engine. Looks like they'll need a total replacement. Has anyone done this? I suspect that I am better off having the shop do the job on a lift instead of me under the car on jackstands.

I had to replace the section from the tank-forward toward the filter (Regina) on our 90 740. For some reason the original one pulled loose from one of its anchors and rubbed against the aft u-joint. I heard it and caught it just before it wore through. This was about 12 years ago so there were non-rusty ones available in the wrecking yards, which is the way I went. If you can't get it a new one You might try some yards in the southwest. Or you could get adventuresome and fab one yourself, but that might require some investment in tools.

Good thoughts, but after checking prices it's not that big a deal to just buy new ones that I know will fit. Plus I don't relish the job, stuck underneath with particles of rust falling into my face, so I'll likely have the shop do this. All the lines and connectors from the tank to the filter are in tough shape.

        Dear Steve,

Hope you're well. It might be helpful if connectors to the fuel tank and fuel filter were soaked for several days with a penetrating oil (e.g., PB Blaster or Kroil). That might ease the loosening of these fittings.

Cutting the rusted-out pipes may mean there's no need to pre-treat other fuel pipe connectors.

        Hope this helps.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

    Dear Steve,

Hope you're well. I recall a post by lucid, who reported that he had changed the pipe from the tank to an (under-mounted) pump. As '95 models have a single, in-tank pump, the pipe will go to the fuel filter and thence to the engine.

I'd check carefully to be sure that all parts are still available.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Good points. Parts are starting to diminish for these cars but a quick perusal of Volvo of Oak Park seems to indicate that all the fuel pipes and fittings are available. I want to keep this going and pass it down one generation for a few more years of use. I am just waiting for the call from our son in Manhattan noting that his Volvo has been hit by a sanitation truck and can he have one of ours...

One mechanic I used used nylon zip ties to secure new fuel line alongside the old one,,worked well as long as it secures to a solid surface
