Overdrive came on while driving on interstate. The overdrive light did not come on? Any thoughts?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, Jon, it certainly is a shopworn subject among 240 owners. Was this OD wire somehow better protected in the 7 series? You think?

      some troubleshooting tricks here

PS, Jon, would you believe I drove 2000 miles last month and saw not one 240 until the trip home was nearly over -- in an eastern Ohio rest stop. 245 looked like it belonged to one of the concession employees based on where it was parked and the subwoofer in the back.

Art, There are many, many 240s here in Portland, Maine. There are three within a two block radius of where I live.
        Not sure why...maybe the hippie sub-culture ;>)

Everyone wants to replace a part. In all likelihood, the wire between the shifter box and the solenoid has rotted, or its connector corroded, and it could be you need to check these cheap and easy fixes before ordering parts.

This is confusing. Overdrive is the default position you are saying, thus if the solenoid fails it will go to overdrive right?
But if the arrow is on permanently, with no change from using the button, does this mean the solenoid failed in the lower gear position?
Our car was seeming to be stuck in the lower gear except occasionally it will let go and run with the higher gear. I took it out on Monday for a long drive and it stayed in the higher setting. I did have the wire to that arrow disconnected on the back of the speedo, as it annoyed me but I didn't even know what it was for.
So at 100k's it is running at about 2200rpm where before it was running at 3000rpm.
Makes a lot of difference to fuel usage. Also makes a rougher ride with higher revs, always seems a bit more hectic.
Anyway, where can I find this solenoid so I can disable it. I will never tow anything with this car and just enjoy the quiet cruising with overdrive as usual.
It's for my son who also needs max fuel economy.
Or would simply leaving the wire off the speedo disconnect the solenoid?

The solenoid allows the tranny to go into the higher gear and is default. If the solenoid (and presumably the indicator arrow) is not operational, the car will not go into a higher "cruising" gear and will have a sort of "buzz" to it when on the freeway.
When all is normal and as intended the default cruising can be over-ridden by pressing the button which deactivates the solenoid and forces the tranny into a lower gear. And yes, it's intended for towing, going up steep hills with a heavy load, etc.
When I jump onto a busy freeway and rapidly accelerate in order to quickly blend into traffic my car doesn't get into it's highest "cruising" gear until I'm going 60-65 mph.
I'd recommend connecting up all the electronics to the solenoid (including the arrow light) and checking the kick down cable. Might just need an adjustment.
I've put about 300K miles on my '90 240. Two years ago I had to replace the kick down cable, but I've not have had any problems with the solenoid.

What do you mean "overdrive came on"? Did it shift up unto overdrive (which is where it should be on the interstate) or did it shift down out of overdrive?

When you press the button on the side of the shifter it should shift down out of overdrive and the green arrow on the dash comes on. When you press the button again, it shifts back into overdrive and the arrow goes off. The arrow indicates that overdrive is disabled, as for hauling a heavy trailer or descending a steep hill.

Did you accidentally hit the activation button and the dash light doesn't work? Is it stuck?
It's actually an "under-drive", in that it puts the tranny in a lower gear.
Must be a way to test the solenoid?

It turned out to be the wire from the shifter somehow broke off at the connector. I cut off the stock connector-Both sides and used a standard electrical crimp connector with an added piece of wire than used a tie wrap against the chassis.
