The car transport companies you speak with are brokers and represent various car carrier services (the fleet and truck owners / operators). Indeed, take to heart what oldduke and the other unnamed respondent reply to your initial post.
The carrier service you actually encounter is a separate business. The wholesale vendor, if you will.
Few auto transport services do anything by rail unless you reside between Washington DC and NYC. Something that FedEx does with freight rail and car carrier rail cars.
You will want to research a car transport or carrier service.
I've spoken with, has all the insurance, yet have yet to use:

Pat Lynch-President

www.transportreviews.com
www.bbb.org
(The transportreviews.com and bbb.org are in the email signature from Pat, the owner.)
I've spoken with, has all the insurance, shipped my 1990 Volvo 240 DL wagon from STL to Portland, OR in April 2006.
Able Auto Transport (a broker MC195242)

To ship two Volvo 240s from, say, St. Louis, MO to Portland, OR is about 1500-1700 or so now.
Questions?
Hope that helps.
Duffed.
