after a LOT of prying my oil filter is OFF and replaced. In the process I may have broken the RH motor mount. Current suggestions as to the best reasonably priced one to get? Should I try to replace both engine mounts and tranny mount? Thoughts? any problems with gentle driving while broken? Thanks.

These Motor mounts do break. Your Filter prying was probably not the reason. The way they are designed is crappy for longevity but I guess Volvo wanted the mount to break easily during a crash. Having Rubber ultrasonically welded to a piece of metal that will be pulling against it is just the wrong way to do it.

The NAPA mounts lasted as long as the OEM for me. I do them in pairs but the passenger side does seem to be the one that fails.

One way to determine that the RH motor mount is gone, is noticing that the oil filter is sitting firmly on it.

You may need to replace the motor mount in order to install the oil filter.

Yes, if not sooner. It sounds like you will need to remove the motor mount at your next oil change. Might as well do both if you are going to wait on the motor mount replacement.

In my experience, original equipment Volvo motor mounts are by far the cheapest because they last FAR longer than aftermarket. That applies to any bonded rubber part. Not only do you save the cost of replacing a part which queefs out way too soon, but, as important, you save the time it takes to replace it.

With some of the prices I've been getting at TASCA, original Volvo parts are not all that much more costly.

Although I usually replace all the mounts if I am going under the car for one, I would not argue with anyone who says that is overkill as long as the other mounts are still intact.

I think the first problem which could eventually come from driving with a broken engine mount is a fracture in the exhaust system. You could go quite a few miles before anything nasty happens, but it will catch up to you sooner or later.

Agree on the brand although I have had great service with Meyle brand as well. Cheapest are not worth the labor to install

Unless the left side is seriously deformed I would leave it to another day and inspect it at oil changes.

Labor time is basically twice as much to do both sides as it is one only so if you have the time or money do what makes you comfortable. Left side does not get oil dripped on it from oil changes and is less stressed when compared to the right side.

Ah, well, if you have the time to replace both motor mounts and the transmission mount, if, on inspection, they appear to need replacement, I'd say "giddy yup!"

As you sit in your venerable, yet mighty, Volvo 240, looking forward, the left side motor mount is more gracile and smaller then the right (under the oil filter) motor mount as the redblock engine in the Volvo 240 tends to want to lift up off the left side (under the thermostat) motor mount as you accelerate.

Even in engines where the right side motor was soaked in oil and well sagged, the right motor needed replacement I'd found.

I actually have Scantech motor mounts, just before they changed their name to Swedespeed or ProPartsSweden (?), I think. After like four-five years or so, they are fine and without sag. I'd even say they are veavier, denser, and beeffier than the OEM for 1992 240 sedan and behave like the deisel motor mounts (when you could get these from Volvo, they transfer more engine vibration, a bit, I like that, though, though) I also slapped in a transmission mount under the M47 II manual transmission.
