M41 transmission/OD oil? 1800 1972

I want to drain and replenish the oil in my 1972 M41 transmission/OD. In my Foreign Autotech manual ts prescribes SAE 10-30 but in the Haynes manual it states 90wt. Which is correct?

Had a lot of problems with the OD in my 70E. (M410) using the factory-recommended 30w. Switched to 90W gear oil and everything worked fine. But then spoke to someone at RedLine and they advised against anything with GL5 additives as they induce friction and retard the spin-up of the synchronizers. Switched to their synthetic RedLine MT-90 and it's been smooth sailing since.

Ok, no need to answer my previous question. I later found a multitude of answers in the Search results: ATF, 30wt, 40wt,90wt, non detergent, detergent, etc.

lol.. Yep, the list you posted pretty much covers all the answers that have come up here over the years :)

Read your owners manual, not your Haynes. There was a time that 90wt messed with the overdrives, but it seems 90wt properties have changed with technology, and plenty of folks use it without problems.

I stick with straight 40wt, as you've probably seen. 240s with overdrive ask for ATF. So that's what I use for them.

Most importantly, keep it topped up, and never ever use any slippery additives. Some of those.. well... might be fine. I choose not to risk it (I wrecked an overdrive with a slick-50 additive)

        Hi Mr. Matt B,

        You write:

Most importantly, keep it topped up, and ...

I'm forgetting right now ... do we also use the overfill method on these gearbox transmissions?

You know, like on the 240 with at least the M47, where you verify you can loose both gear box crank case plugs, drain it, then safely raise the left side (as you sit in) of the Volvo, and overfill the M41/M40 and the like gear boxes?

I think we do this for our M45/46 gear boxes also, yes?

I know on VW gear boxes, owners will overfill them with fresh fluid.

        Oh well.

        Anyways, Happy Memorial Day, everybody!

        Thank you,

        Sundae MacDuffed.

No there isn't the same problem with the M41 as there is with the early M47.
If filling the M41 from completely, i.e. the OD has been drained as well as the box you can try and do the overfill trick but recheck the level after a couple of hundred miles as the oil has to get over a small hump into the OD section. Your level might be a bit low if you don't The OD doesn't function well with low oil. If you just drain the gearbox via the plug, some oil will remain in the OD so you shouldn't really have to recheck it, but its good practice to do so anyway.
Oil type? I'm middle of the road and just use 20/50 the same as the engine. The OD in my 220 wagon works very sweetly and the 4 door I had previously was just as smooth.

I just changed the fluid in my friend's '75 245 M-41. For the sake of being technical about it I dug up an owners manual for the year. For the M-40 it showed 80-90W and for the M41 it said straight 30W -- or 20-40W. Tom showed up with 20-50 racing oil. That's what went in. I'm sure it will be fine. -- Dave

Your Volvo 1800 series or a Volvo 140 series owner manual should help from the same year range or so.

My 1974 imprint of my J. H. Hayne's Volvo 142, 144 & 145 Owner's Workshop Manual indicates Castrol GTX, same as the engine. I'm not so certain using engine oil in a manual gear box.

Some concern about additives (detergents) being compatible with the material from which the synchros are fabricated. I don't recall currently.

In my Haynes 1997 imprint of the Volvo 240 Series 1976 through 1993 (All gasoline engine models) Haynes Repair Manual, for M40 & M41 use SAE 80/90W or 80/90 hypoid gear oil.

      http://www.vclassics.com/archive/tranreb.htm:
Volvo recommends 90W gear oil for the M40 and 30W motor oil for the M41.

Do not use a hypoid if a gear oil. Some may use a straight mineral or synthetic 30 weight or heavier engine oil with M41. Use a detergent FREE straight weight motor oil, state others, as detergents may damage synchros. I disagree to using ATF, even a Ford ATF "Type G". Some may use a heavier version of Redline MTL.

vvpete, the harbinger of proper lubricants in your Volvo manual transmission here and on turbobricks, says he's used SAE 50 weight motor oil in the thread link below.

Irv Gordon, who now has more than 2.75 million miles on his 1800S, insists on using only gear oil. He tried the 30W, and before he made it home he returned to the dealership and had it changed back to gear oil because he didn't like the new noises he heard coming from the gearbox.

Mind you, the Haynes 1997 imprint of the Volvo 240 Series 1976 through 1993 (All gasoline engine models) Haynes Repair Manual also indicates Dexron II for all power steering fluid. And that is just WRONG. Why? Cause now my 1990 240 DL wagon no longer has power steering. Stupid me!

      cheers,

      dud.
