Transmission Replacement? 200 1989

Hi,

I have a 1989 240 wagon and I have been told by two separate garages that the transmission has something "rattling around inside" and they want to charge me $1500 to replace the transmission. My car has about 175K miles on it. Is there such a thing as a rebuilt transmission for this model?, or will they just be getting a transmission from some Volvo at the junk yard and slapping it into my car. I am ok with spending the money because I am so invested in this car already... I just don't want to waste the money if it's a lost cause... Thanks so much for any advice. I am located in Brooklyn, NY.

Cheers,
Dag

Dagomatic:

From the Vermont Craigslist link, I think $100 is a great price for a used 240 transmission. Assuming your tranny is actually bad (get a second opinion from Dave if possible), I'd jump on that used one and then find someone to install it for you.

Paging Volvo from Heck/Dave 200 1989

Hi dagomatic,

Do you have an auto or stick? Either way, you can get a third opinion from Volvo from Heck/Dave. Without a doubt, he's the guy you should get in touch with. He really knows his stuff. Good luck.

--

I recommend you to replace the rear main seal while the tranny is taken off.

Thanks... Sorry I don't post much, so I don't know Dave Heck (?) is, will he eventually respond here?

It's a stick.

Best,
Dag

thanks for the endorsement SB. Chances are - if the transmission is in need of repair - it would be much more economical to "slap in a used" than rebuild--but rebuilding is certainly doable. If the car is an '89 -- I guess that means an M47. Question for the original poster--does your shifter have 5 speeds or 4 plus an electrically activated overdrive gear (M46)? An M47 is not so easy to find in this neck of the woods--I sometimes see them at you-pull-it places while visiting family in North Carolina. On jobs like this I often collaborate with a long time (over 40 years) friend--Danish, Volvo trained in Denmark. He has much more experience rebuilding transmissions than me. If the original poster wants to drive out to Bay Shore I can take a look/listen and see if we can come up with a plan. Tomorrow (Friday) would work -- or sometime next week. If the OP should follow through with the ad linked from the Vermont craigslist - I have the near $30 bellhousing to transmission gasket--left over from a potential job--the folks wanted a transmission--and then didn't. $20 incl. postage. -- Dave
