Various windshield questions 120-130

I'm posting this on the other site as not all readers may visit both

I am about to purchase a replacement windshield and gasket for a 122 to install in a couple of weeks.

I was going to get a gasket without the slit for the trim. It's going on a black car, and I'm all right with no trim as opposed to beat up trim.

The part number for the trim I've sourced is 657440, and is also spec'ced for 544, 210. So it seems that lengthwise, the glass and opening perimeter in both the amazon and PV are the same?

Can anybody verify this having installed a trimless gassket in a 122? Is there any reason not to use this gasket?

The other question has to do with the glass.

I'd given a mechanic friend (who can get this locally from Volvo for less than I can buy it + shipping somewhere else) the part number 656843. Standard, clear. He came back telling me that that number has been superseded by Volvo to 1213297. None of the usual suspects VP, VIP CVI, show this number. The only hit I got googling Volvo 1213297 was Skandix.

So my question for everyone and especially Eric: is Volvo now supplying glass they get from Skandix as Volvo made stuff, or is this just a newer number and the usual suspects haven't made the change in their lists/coding? Anything I should be looking out for?

thanks

Various windshield questions 120-130

I've got the new windshield and trimless seal. I've located a local source for POR 15. But before I pull the old one out and start prepping for the new install, I wanted to have the sealant I'm going to use in hand. Looking on the NAPA site I see many listed.

http://www.napaonline.com/Catalog/Result.aspx?Ntt%3dglass%2bsealants%26Ntk%3dKeyword%26Nty%3d1%26Dn%3d0%26D%3dglass%2bsealants%26Dk%3d1%26Dp%3d3%26N%3d0

When I last did this I used a NAPA sealant. Looking at old posts I found reference to NAPA MS 4121. This may be what I last used. I don't remember.

Can those of you who have done this talk to me about which sealant you have used? In Phil Singher's VClassics post on this topic he recommended using silicone, but I think I later read somewhere he suggested not to use silicone. I think the NAPA sealant is a butyl material. Is a 5 oz. tube sufficient for one windshield?

thanks!

Nowadays I use the NAPA stuff. The seal and windshield go on dry, and then you force the stuff in between the seal and the body, and the seal and the glass.

Phil
After removing the seal, and apparently there is little to no rust, I'm dealing with trying to remove a lot of hardened sealant from 50 years ago. This is what was btw the gasket and the body. Any suggestions for solvents that will soften the putty but not damage the paint?

thanks

I have no idea what melts that stuff, frankly. What I've done the last few times is chip it off with a narrow putty knife, and then POR-15 the flange. It's going to be under the seal anyway, so you just need to protect the metal from rusting.

How about solvent for NAPA 4121 for cleanup? 120-130

Martin Senour tech support was very unhelpful about what solvent works for cleanup. They, of course, recommend their own (actually a 3M product) 4070.

The packaging says to use a dry rag. Can you tell me if mineral spirits or paint thinner works?

POR 15 went on real nice. Best part is that's glossy black and so is the car.

I'll have a second set of hands to help with the installation tomorrow morning.

thanks

Various windshield questions 120-130

657440 is the rubber screen trim for the PV Favorit (basic and standard type of specs. This has no slot for the shiny trim. Available from CVI.
http://www.classicvolvoimports.co.uk/en/articles/2.14349.42931/windscreen-seal-pv-favorit-for-type-wo-trim-mouldi

PV and Duett screens and seals are the same but are different to the Amazon ones and won't fit. PV and Duett screen rubbers are available with and without the slot for shiny trim.
The listing by VP saying that the Amazon, Duett and PV screen trim is the same, is wrong. Amazon screen is shallower and wider.

Amazon also had a Favorit version, mostly sold in Denmark as a cheaper version to get under a price, set for higher tax.
CVI don't list a no trim type seal for the Amazon.
http://www.classicvolvoimports.co.uk/en/articles/2.14502.44458/front-screen-seal-amazon-for-cars-with-trim-mouldi

That doesn't get you a no trim seal for your Amazon though. Get in touch with CVI by email, they may have one hiding away and unlisted. They are very helpful.

Various windshield questions 120-130

Danny,

It is so strange you post about this subject as I am about to find out.

I am in the middle of a sale to a customer that includes a front 122 windshield and a VP supplied 657440 to be installed on a 122.

I am also skeptical the gasket will fit, but VP insists it will work.

When I get the seal which is scheduled for delivery later TODAY, I will attempt to install it on a windshield to verify the fit.

FYI, your inquiry caused me to discover that Skandix shows the correct Volvo part number for the seal without trim for a 122, 660864.

Volvo updated the part numbers for the windshields so both the numbers are correct. Volvo stills sells the front windshield in both clear and tinted using updated numbers 1213297 for clear and 1237299 for tinted.

FYI, VP likes to use the older part numbers for some of their parts. I believe this is because they use original Volvo parts catalogs for reference.

Eric
I am wondering if you had any luck trying to source the 'product" number for 660864 on the Skandix site -1018205, from Volvo. Where did Skandix get this part and number? How is it different from the VP part 657440?

l guess my issues using a seal from a PV on a 122, assuming the length was identical, would be the thickness and depth of the slot for the glass; the thickness and depth of the slot for the body metal; whether the profiles of the lips in both bodies are the same. I don't have a gasket here in front of me, but would think that both slots for metal and glass would be coplanar so the glass wouldn't have a tendency to pop in or out. I would think ideally both trim and trimless seals would have the same profile - just that the trimless is minus the slit for the trim.

In a post above yours from Derek, he writes: "The listing by VP saying that the Amazon, Duett and PV screen trim is the same, is wrong. Amazon screen is shallower and wider."

?????

657440 does fit a 122 front windshield 120-130

No, I haven't for 2 reasons.

1st is I did not know until after I ordered the 657440 from VP, that Skandix had the part.

2nd, shipping from Germany.

Derek is correct and the 544 and 122 windshields are different, but apparently the total outer lengths are very close to the same.

I was able to install the 657440 on a 122 front windshield and it does fit.

This is possible because the 657440 seal is made from a bulk extrusion that is glued together to make a contiguous piece and does not have any molded corners like the rear windshield seal for a 122 coupe/sedan.

I did not try to install the windshield with seal in a car as the seal is being sold to a customer and I don't want to risk damage to the seal.

Yeah, I wrote to Matthias at Skandix and was quoted E42.65 + E30 for shipping (delivery time approx. 14 days. )!!

I think I'll go with the 657440 as both you and Julio verify that it fits. I'm also assuming that there is no difference in how the glass sits in the opening - i.e. the slits for glass and body are in the same relationship to each other in both seals.
I just would like to know the difference btw the 2 seals with different numbers for the same application in a 122 - front windshield with no trim.

Would you be placing the joint center top or center bottom?

Hey Julio
Did you do the installation yourself? How does it fit? Any issues installing it and how long ago? Is Swedish Treasures stuff Volvo or aftermarket?

thanks

I had installed by Hibernia Auto Restorations in Hibernia ,N.J. about two years ago. It fits fine. I heard a rumor that Swedish Treasures gets their supply from VP. I don't know how true that is. The part did appear to have a Volvo sticker on it.

I had them do the rear windshield at the same time with the same type of trimless seal.

The Scandix number 1018205 is their product number. The seal is listed for Amazon only.

This is indeed fortuitous (for me)! Who would I rather have be my guinea pig?

You're going to be able to answer all of my questions!

I'll go ahead with (and not cancel) the glass order, and wait until I hear your opinion about the gasket.

I'll try and see if I can synch my next project with your upcoming work. Works for me.

thanks, as always

Whoever you buy the rubber gasket from, be sure its guaranteed to fit. I haven't replaced a Volvo windshield (yet) but broke one in a Morris Minor because the gasket was slightly too big. Also make sure the new glass is not larger than the old one. A 32nd of an inch can make a big difference. Good luck.
