Survey: Amazon Chassis No. vs. Headrest Receiver Tubes in Seatback 120-130

Forum:

If your Amazon was produced in the '64 - '68 range, and if your seatbacks are original and unmodified, please check these and report on which condition you find (along with Chassis No.). This information will be used to give a better picture of what year and with which chassis seats with tubes began to be fitted by the factory:

Condition 1 - No Headrests, and no receiver tubes in seatback.
Condition 2 - No Headrests installed, but receiver tubes present in seatback.

...if your vehicle was retrofitted with headrests and you know the condition your vehicle was delivered in from the factory, you are welcome to add your info (with explanation) to this survey.

Thanks for participating!

    1967 estate vin # 222441053001. Upholstery is not original, not sure about the seats but unable to feel any tubes beneath light foam padding.

    Here's a picture of my '65 seats when I installed the headrest. No receiver tubes were present, but I grabbed them from the donor seats. All 65-on seats were setup for headrests, but I thought '67 were the first year that the factory installed the receiver tubes for easy dealer option installation. I think the dealer just needed to cut the holes at the top of the seats, install the plastic pieces and slide in the headrest. Not sure how much of the plastic pieces was installed with the receiver tubes.

      If the plastic pieces, which seem to be an extension of the metal tubes, are missing from my 67, I would never be able to push down hard enough to locate the metal tubes. I assume the plastic pieces have the catches or whatever is required to hold the head rest at a certain height.

    '64 coupe (presumably late, as it's titled as '65)
    No headrests, no hardware to accept them. Condition #1.

    '66 wagon, no headrests, Seat hardware in place to accept headrests. Condition #2

    '67 123GT (late April '67 production, Originally German delivery), no headrests, seat hardware is in place. Condition #2

    I'll have to get back with chassis #s. I can also check a late '67... it's got dual circuit brakes, but I don't recall if it's got headrests. I'm sure it's got the tubes.

    My chassis # is 133441284865. My 68 came with headrests installed. I no longer have those seats. My car was in sea water in December 1992. I replaced the seats with Corbeau Sport Seats.

    Dumb question, perhaps, but... how can you tell? My impression was that even with the headrest tubes, they are upholstered over and you cannot see them.

    Can you post a picture of an unupholstered seat frame? Or two: one with the tubes, one without?

      Matt;

      ...yes, they are "upholstered over", but there is no padding under the vinyl up there...so one is able to tell pretty quickly if tubes are present or not by just "feeling around".

      Thanks for responses so far...keep 'em coming!

      Probably the cars of condition 2 were introduced in August 1967 (from chassis 279900 on).

        USA & Canada cars got headrests as standard for the 1968 models (August 1967). Did any other markets get the headrests before then? Would be reasonable that the tubes started to be fitted a month or two before August to facilitate the headrest fitting before the introduction date.
        How about the 123GT? Any owner like to check their seats? Thinking maybe Volvo considered fitting them to the GT but then decided not to but fitted the tubes as part of the plan.

        Gert;

        What do you base your specific information on? Can substantiate your suggestion? It is essentially what I am trying to come up with, so would interest me greatly where you got this date and chassis no from.

        Cheers
