re: 87 245 auto - loose bolt washers on 4th exhaust pipe/header 200 1987

Hi All,

As I am putting new plugs, I notice that both bolt washers are really loose. There is at least 1/16" play between the bolt & header. There is no leak, I think ... And bolts are tight. What should I do? I need this car running until this Oct.

I applied some PB blaster. Thank you as always.

Can you tighten the nut(s) after soaking with your favourite penetrant overnight? Either the nut or stud should turn. If not, then just forget about it until an exhaust gasket starts to leak and then snap off the stud replacing them. I had that happen a couple of years ago and just did without the missing stud and it hasn't leaked yet.

Hi oldyeller

I was able to loosen both nuts without breaking the studs. Now, how much force do I need to tighten these rusty nuts.

I am using 3/8 ratchet with 6 point craftsman socket. For now, I pushed my thumb at the end of rachet. Thank you as always.

re: 87 245 auto - loose bolt washers on 4th exhaust pipe/header 200 1987

Sounds about right. The FAQ says: "Retorque to 10-20 ft lbs (14-27 Nm) for B230F/T, 15 ft-lb (20 Nm) for B234F, 7-11 ft lbs (10-15 Nm) for B280F." But it's hard to get in there with a torque wrench. First make sure the threads are clean and the nuts turn easily and use anti-seize on the studs.

Hi oldyellr,

I just went for a short test drive. Everything seems to be fine for now. Thank you for your help! Thank you and have a wonderful evening.
