Broken odometer gear? 200 1984

I've read about odometer gears failing in the post-86 speedometer heads, but rarely in pre-'86 heads.

My 84's odometer just stopped at 425,382. For a couple of weeks it has been counting 1 mile for every 2.5 or so driven.

Is my understanding correct that this speedo head has metal gears? Or would they be the same plastic gears used in the 86 and up heads? How difficult is it to replace the gear that has failed?

Not all the gears are metal. Some are plastic and they can crack radially. In my 84, around 300K I found the shaft had worn under the large pot metal gear.

    No one answer for all.

Gotta take it apart and have a look see.

      Thanks, Art.

Would the trip meter stopping at the same time point to anything? Speedo still works
