Can I drive 500 miles with a bad AT Tailshaft Bushing? 700 1990

Heya folks.

I replaced my carrier bearing and mount the other day and the noise is 10x what it was with the failed mount.
I took my car to a driveline specialty shop and he said that other than cheap u-joints, my driveline itself looked fine, though it might need to be rebalanced.

He then looked over the whole driveline and said that there is play in the transmission. He said bearings, I was worried, and then I remembered/saw the tailshaft bushing could cause this kind of play.
I'm in the process of moving to Portland, OR from about 450 miles south. I drove up here and it was/has been pretty durn noisy.

So here's my question - Can I drive it back home without damaging the transmission, or should I get this thing fixed before I leave town? It is pretty loud and I hear it "beating"/thrumming. The guy who told me it was big trouble told me he isn't knowledgeable about transmissions. I'm confident that it's just the tailshaft bushing - or the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced, but I don't think that's the case.

In an (I think) unrelated issue, the overdrive won't engage and the light won't turn off. The fuse/relay are fine. The dash light is illuminated even with the fuse removed. It worked fine on the drive up here, but I figured I mis-routed it and it wore through from rubbing on the driveline. I had the chance to replace a crimp under the car and rig up a hanger, which I expected to fix it. It didn't fix it, but it seems like an unrelated electrical issue. Maybe just a loose wire under the shifter.

If you keep the tranny fluid in the operating range it will be fine for 500 miles. The big question is how fast is it losing fluid. Buy a case and hit the road...

I have replaced some very worn tailshaft bushings on Volvo AW's. I have never had one that was noisey because of being sloppy.

When they get worn they increase the stress on the rear seal and then they leak fluid- and sometimes lots of fluid. Are you losing fluid?

I've got it in at a shop right now. I'm actually not losing any fluid at all. It seems kind of odd.

I wonder what year they switched to the roller bearings.

        1993-95 have the roller bearings.

      Thumping noise 700 1990

Yup, my 240 started leaking a lot of fluid after awhile.

If you also getting a thumping noise then chances are pretty high the tailhaft bushing is shot. The thumping is caused by slop in the tailshaft bushing. Get under the car and check if there is slop where the tailshaft bolts to the driveshaft. Try wiggling the driveshaft back and forth with your hands. If there is any significant movement your tailshaft bushing is shot. If you do replace it, make sure the bushings's seal is replaced too. Oh, and look for tranny fluid while you are there.

IMHO - I wouldn't drive it 500 miles in its present condition. If you can't check it out yourself, I'd find a reputable Volvo specialist to look at it. I know they exist in Portland, search the BB. Maybe even IPD? Driving it 500 miles might run it out of fluid. I doubt it will destroy the tranny mechanicals if you keep fluid in it, but I'm no expert... :)

I've never been to Portland, but I picture the area to have a Volvo shop on about every third corner. More than you'd find in Gothenburg. One will still have the bushing extractor tool to make really quick work of this job. Ask. You might be pleasantly surprised with an affordable quote, given your array of choices.

On all the volvos I'Ve owned, I always removed the tail piece of the transmission to replace the bushing and seal. Tha bushing are rolled metal and fingered seamed together. Just beating on this bushing can distort the seam as where having the end /tail section of the transmission give you a nice flat surface to PRESS the bushing in with steady pressure.

Realized that I had the fuse/relay tray out to troubleshoot a window that would only wind down and not up (insulation wore through in the door switch pigtail RF door).

So I think the OD issue is totally unrelated. Will check it in the morning.

Maybe one of the new universal joint was damage on replacement. Did you match mark the two drive-shaft halves before you separated them.. I believe their balance at the factory. Check all the small bolts again that hold the shaft flanges.
