Reviving a '92 245 - trans cross member 200 1992

My '87 245 has seen it's last winter and I'm in the process of reviving a '92 245 that was dropped off as a parts car for the kid's 244.

One of the most pressing issues is that the transmission cross member is rusted out. The rubber mount is also shot, but there is not much left to hang a new one on.

Does anyone know what other years/transmissions have compatable cross members ?

Thanks

Greg

I jacked up our '84 parts car and removed a very good looking crossmember that appears to be an exact replacement for the rotted out one on the '92. I can't tell for sure becasue I thought I had a transmission mount rather than all motor mounts... It is really nice when parts are not redesigned just for the heck of it. Thanks for the help.

    Hi Greg,

I don't have any knowledge of manuals, but I was able to replace a cross member from an 80 with a BW auto into my auto 1991 with the Aw trans. I seem to remember having to knock something off it, but it worked fine.

When I got the 91 it had very little rust on the under carriage, but that cross member had disintegrated to the point that you could poke a hole in it with a screwdriver almost anywhere. I found that a little peculiar.

When I removed it, I found 2 spacers between the body and the member at the mounting bolts. They were 10 mil or 3/8 inch and made of aluminum.

Aluminum is known to increase the corrosion rate in steel especially in the presence of salt water, so I replaced them with 3/8 steel plates. I'm not sure if that's what was going on, but it's been 5 years in the salt since the replacement and the paint is still on it.

It might be useful for others to know what trans you have.

That is a little of what I'm seeing. Most of the body is very good, but a few things are a pile of rust. I'll have to dig under our '84 and see if the cross member is any good. Thanks

      Greg

All 240 trans crossmembers will work. Some models may have rubber insulators with a steel sleeve in the middle of each mounting hole--those do not use the aluminum spacers. Some models may have a drilled tab for a clutch return spring. Those are the only differences I can think of off-hand but make no matter. -- Dave
