1988 Volvo 240 Service light on at engine start / then turns off 1988

My Volvo 240's 'service' light turns on when I turn on the car, and then turns off about 3-5 minutes after I've been driving it.

The 'bulb-out' light turns on when I turn on my lights as well, yet all the bulbs are functioning properly.

Other than these two things, car works great. Just not sure if I should be wary?

Would love feedback,
thanks

To reset your service light you have to reach behind the instrument cluster and move the reset lever. Kitty speaks of a button on the front, but he is thinking about the later models which have air bags.

Your bulb out sensor is sensitive. You can tell which of the three categories is causing the warning lamp by when it occurs. If on parking light position, it is the tail lights. If on headlights position - one of the headlights. If when you step on the brakes - brake lights. Give the bulbs a twist in their sockets, the sockets a twist in their positions in the lamp fixture, and exercise the wiring harness connectors to clear any invisible corrosion the warning system is reporting. You might not notice a difference in lamp intensity, but this circuit will be better than your eyes are. Some say replace the bulbs in matched pairs. All these things serve to clean dirty connections, which is in most cases the reason for your spurious warning lamp.

      Uncle Art,

I only blame the Alzheimer's or dementia and sucking on Volvo fumes since 1973.

And the later 1970s 240/260s had this same oil reset. Or was it the EGR reset in 1979. Where was a cable or connector between the mechanical speedo and the EGR box? Goodness knows I'd repaired enough 80s models to know when I was mechanic-ing to pay for college and rent.

Not unlike my confusion with that rear cylinder head valve cover gasket half-moon plug. It becomes round on the low-friction OHC redblock 4-bangers.

      Thanks,

      Duffy.

Oil change reminder light. Every 5000 miles after reset.

At the lower right or lower left is a recessed button. You use a dull, thin nail or something to push it to reset the oil change service light reminder.

I changed my oil last week, yet have to find something to reset the oil change reminder light reset switch.

You 1988 Volvo 240 owner manual should have information on this feature.

    Hope that helps.

    Duff.

        I missed the 'bulb-out' 200 1988

        I missed the:

The 'bulb-out' light turns on when I turn on my lights as well, yet all the bulbs are functioning properly.

Does the bulb out indicator light remain on the entire time the lights are on? Mis-matched bulbs left to right on a bulb out failure reed relay-monitored light bulb circuit? Continuity imbalance along the wire harness and across connectors and bonds. A failing bulb out sensor?

        As for:
'service' light turns on when I turn on the car, and then turns off about 3-5 minutes after I've been driving it.

If not the odometer-count for oil replacement at 5000 miles, some sort of intermittent failure causing temporary fault code and set of the check engine light for a few minutes. We have a host of these. I did not imagine the primitive OBD to be so dynamic give faulty input for one cause or another.

Art B. will let you know.

        cheers,

        dud.
