Volvo 244 tailights 1984?? 200 1984

So i'm looking for new tailights for my brick and i ran into a stump.
Will tailights for 1985-1990 work on my 1984? Read a few forums saying replace circuit board from current one to the new, but not sure. If so how hard would it be to do it?

    Volvo 244 tailights 1984?? 200 1984

    TheJW,

A similar question was asked on this vintage (1984) Volvo 240.

    https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1612462/220/240/260/280/tail_light_circuit_board.html

Your 1984 Volvo 240 tail lights should have, on the flexi board, only two electrical contacts for the lower, outermost brake light (red lens).

As of 1986-87-88 (not certain), the wire harness changed twice with the third, of high center brake light and the dual-filament brake light bulbs for the lower, outer most red brake light panel on 240 six-panel wrap around tail lights. I think the vendors like iPd call it a 1985 to 1990 tail light. I'm not sure.

The dual-filament brake light bulbs in the lower and outermost tail light (red) lens) displays the parking / position / running / marker lamps.

The flexi circuit boards will mechanically fit between the 1981+ (or 1982) wrap-around six-panel Volvo 240 tail lights.

If you need new tail lights, and are not swarthy to the ways of the junkyard, you may want to purchase new OEM tail lights. Try Tasca Volvo parts for the best price.

The after market tail lights, like the oft-metioned Made in Estonia tail lights, are not well made. (They look okay, yet the adhesive used to secure the tail light lens to the reflector body housing is apparently poor quality, unless that has change and the quality improved, we hope.) I doubt Hella or Valeo make Volvo 240 tail lights, save for what you can get from the dealer. (I dunno what OEM vendor makes 240 tail lights for Volvo; maybe still Valeo I'd seen up to the 2000s.)

If merely replacing tail lights, the mechanical fit is the same on your 1984 244 sedan (and the 242 final year 1984 coupe) and my 1992 240.

What's different is the wire harness and connector.

You have no third, or high center, brake light. Your brake lights are set up and wired for a single filament brake light bulb.

On these Volvo 240 six-panel wrap around dual-filament brake light bulbs, you have two special bulb holders to accommodate the dual-filament brake light bulbs (and the dual-filament brake light bulb taillight flexi circuit board.)

If you read the other brickboard thread, I was treating how to deal with this issue, and compatibility, using the junk yard for parts.

IF you mean to buy new, replacement tail lights for your 1984 Volvo 240 ...

All after market Volvo 240 tail lights will be compliant with the final design spec, with the dual-filament brake light.

At the very least, you'll need to modify the 1984 Volvo 240 wire harness tail light connector. You'll have to switch conductor positions. You may have to replace the connector. I'm not sure.

If you go Volvo OEM, you may have 240 sedan / coupe tail light options that are a direct replacement. I'm not sure.

You can phone your local Volvo stealership and ask about options.

    FCP Groton was inconclusive.

iPd USA has this for you:

The Taillamp Assemblies - 240 260 1979-1984 are six panel, after market, yet may help you. Call the iPd folks.

The brake light position on the flexi circuit board appears to be a single filament brake light set up, as your 1984 Volvo 240 came with when built.

Else, I leave you with my fave image I uploaded right here on your beloved Brickboard.com!

    Hope that helps.
