another annoying question on 240 odometers

hi sages- plan is totake out the cluster and inspect it. but busy right now and cant do it. odometer works intermittently. speedometer works fine. 92 245 239k miles. noticed strange behavior- when odometer has stopped while rolling, tapping with knuckles on cluster face makes odo start working and it works for the rest of the day.suspect that this is strong tipoff that the cause is cracked solder connectivity on the back of the cluster which has often been referred to here. anybody here had the same experience and agrees with my interpretation? thanks tons oldduke

another annoying question on 240 odometers

If I had to guess, I'd bet that one of the teeth on the odometer drive gear might have sheared off a little bit, maybe not enough to totally cause the odometer to stop turning, but enough to hang it up from time to time.

Tapping it with your thumb might jostle it enough to make contact with the drive gear and keep it working.

As I'm sure you've heard, the most important thing you can do to extend the life of the odometer on this (and every other model of Volvo going back to the 544) is to not reset the trip meter while the car is in motion. The drive gear is not synchronized with the odometer gear, and it can cause damage when it reengages.

While having a working odometer isn't a necessity, it is nice to have. My 544 came to me with a broken odometer. I will always wonder how many miles she really has on her.

another annoying question on 240 odometers

hi dylan- i replaced those gears back in 2012, so doubt it is them. could be the little magnet motor is worn but havent heard anything here about that going bad with other volvo 240 folks. cracked solder connections on the cluster of these old vehicles seem to be a recurrent problem . what think you? thanks oldduke

If you pushed the Trip reset button while the car was moving at any point during the past 4 years, it those gears could certainly be to blame again.

If your drive motor was bad, I think your speedometer would misbehave.

We have replacement gears available at IPD.

Best of luck!

another annoying question on 240 odometers

hi dylan- appreciate you replying back. when i put in new gears 4 years ago , the button for the trip reset was deteriorated and not working . i took it out and the trip odo turns all the time with the regular odo. so there has been no interference from the button since new gears went in. the speedo has always worked. im not sure the little motor on the backofthe cluster only works with the speedo. if that is true than it cannot be the problem. are you sure about that? it may work only the odo. cant seem to get a straight answer on this. if the motor only works the speedo and not the odo then i have to go down a different road. if you can find out the answer to this question would appreciate you letting me know.remember this car(92 240) has the electronic sensor in the differential which works through a mysterious tone ring and transmits the speed to the speedo. no twirling cable out of the trans like old tanks. thanks tons oldduke

another (NOT) annoying question on 240 odometers

Hi oldduke,

Your question is not annoying.

As these cars age, we can encounter even more .... issues of a unique nature.

I'd like a 240/260 FAQ, yet posting these question right here on your fave brickboard.com means others read the post, and learn!

Thank you for the question!

Happy Friday!

(Or, happy Sat-Your-Day Eve.)

Huh Bub.

Hi Duke,

I thought I had seen an odometer repair kit somewhere, so I just checked and found out IPD has a kit with the 25 tooth gear and an instructional DVD for about $29. Someone may have just the gear for less, I don't know. Have you checked Dave's site?

Andrew

hi salt pep- thanks for replying. bought two gears from odometer gears.com 4 years ago and installed them. they seemed stronger and better built than the oe ones in there. old gears were shot and missing teeth. odo worked ok for last 4 years. now its working intermittently with knuckle knocks restarting it.doubt its the gears again. think its cracked solder on the cluster connections or a dying magnet motor. hope its not the little motor. figure thats not available. what think you? thanks tons oldduke
