New guy here with a question. 200 1982

Just a quick hello to everyone; I'm Jon and my son Gage will be using this account too. While we have been working on various marks over the years we are fairly new to Volvos. We got into them about 4 or 5 years ago and absolutely love them. We have an '82 244 and an '84 Turbo wagon that is in the process of getting redone. My first question is with the '82; we have been having a hard time finding info on some lower body trim that it has, and have been getting various opinions as to what it is. I've never seen it on any other cars personally and only have seen it on one other car in a picture. Hoping someone on here can shed some light on it. Once again, it isn't the normal trim that runs up towards the top of the doors and fenders, it is below that about 1/2 way down the doors. I'll upload a picture once I figure out how to on the site.

If you're referring to the upper door trim in this photo - closest to the door handle - that is the standard door trim that comes on all 240 models - with slight variation of chrome/no-chrome over the years. Etc. It's easy to find.

If you're referring to the lower door trim in this photo - the piece clearly missing from the rear passenger door, and you can just see the end of the corresponding piece on the front passenger door - that is a much rarer item and I don't believe is at all very common. I've seen them on occasion, typically on early '80s 240s, and I'm not sure if they were only available on Turbo, GL, or other special model variants. If you are missing a piece of this trim, I'm sure it's out there somewhere, you'll just have to look harder to find it. This of course assumes this was original Volvo trim - which I'm not even entirely sure of.

Thanks for the responses. Yes, it is the lower trim, the one you are missing in your photo. Our car has it and is complete, I'm just baffled as to where it came from. I've heard from a couple of people that it was a dealer installed option. Whether or not that is true, I don't know. Thanks.

Having worked in import dealerships in the 60's, 70's and 80's I'd say with near 100 percent certainty the lower trim your car has was installed at the dealership--probably by an independent contractor who made the rounds of dealers in a locale by appointment, installing the trim sold by the salesmen -- just like the extended warranties, etc, that were sold to boost the end price. Dealers would also have pinstripers on call (paint or tape) for that work too. It may have even been installed as a used car---or by a private owner. -- Dave

Check out the IPD website. They used to carry the belt-line molding some years ago, but I don't know if they still do. Anyhow, it's worth a try. Here's a link: http://www.ipdusa.com/prodtype.asp?VA=683,685
