Door adjustment 444-544

Hello! I just bought a 1960 PV544 that the doors are all out of whack. They don't shut properly and the gaps are all off. By looking at the doors themselves there doesn't seem to be any way to adjust them, now at some point someone welded in some floors and quite frankly they did a very crappy job. Would this be a matter of me removing those floors to jack the car up and straighten it out until the doors sit pretty and the body is straight or IS there a way of adjusting them?

Thank you!
-Sergio

Use an impact screw driver , loosen the screws. Block a piece of 2x4 under the door and jack the door up lightly. Re-tighten the screw and check door closer carfully. Only so much adjustment you can make. This only work if your door pins are in good working order.

Without seeing which way the doors are out of whack, it's hard to say how you could align them. You could shim the hinges, adjust the latching mechanism a bit, but those won't give you large movement in any direction.

If the floors were that rotted (out to the sills, I assume), it's entirely possibly the doors were replaced as well. Subtle variations in manufacturer or the year the car came from could also be contributing to the issue.

Wish I could be more help...body work isn't my forte.

Does the door (s) sag so that you need to lift at the handle to close the door? Check if the ridge below the window in the door lines up with the same on the on the body . You can adjust for some sag by loosening the 3 screws on each hinge where it attaches to the body and where it attaches to the door the holes are over size to allow for some movement. Try them on the body first then on the door. Don't loosen then all at once. If the door is too high then the adjustment works in the opposite. It is possible the hinge pins are worn and there is an over size kit I have seen somewhere to replace the pins.
At the striker (handle )side the receiver also has oversize holes in behind, you can loosen the screws and align the stiker to the latch. Assuming no major frame rot or damage from an accident causing the misalignment or as you suggested bad welding job. There should be enough adjustment to give you what you need. Hope this helps

You certainly won't get panel gaps like a Toyota so if they average 1/8" to 3/16" all round you're doing well. Even a 1/4" at the front edge isn't too bad as it stops the door smudging the wing as it opens.
