Replacing the driveshaft center bearing- mount only. 700

Hey folks! Long time no post.

I'm replacing my driveshaft support bearing on my 90 740t with 2" shaft.
The bearing is in good shape, but the mount is done. Soaked in oil and softer than a bike tire.

Do I need a press to remove the mount? There is a steel ring in both the new and old mount. I think it's a press fit.

Cheers :)

Short answer: No, you don't need a press. Unfortunately, two things happened. 1) My car has a 2" diameter shaft, but takes the 35mmID bearing sold as being for 1.75" shafts, so I had to find another mount locally. Just saying that this can happen.

Anyway, I used a pair of carefully placed needle-nose vice grips and a BFH to knock it loose. It was surprisingly easy once I got it seated right.

You don't necessarily need a press to replace the support. You do need a good machinists vice.
Take the shaft apart, noting the alignment of the "u" joints on each shaft. The longer shaft has the support near the union of the two. By taking a good metal set, or strong steel shaft tap the bearing housing off the shaft. It does come off but it takes care and patience the are two dust shields on either side of the support housing, and if the get bent up you can straighten out easily.
The shaft has a machined shoulder where the bearing and the side of the support rest. So it will seat back to its designed position when you put back together.
The bearing sits inside the support housing and the two pieces slide back onto the shaft easily. Just make sure that the dust cover goes on with the shaft support on either side of the bearing housing.
I use silicone spray to help things along...yuk yuk.
Anyway it is not a difficult job, just time consuming. Even if you had a press, it wouldn't be much easier to complete.
Get a piece of pvc pipe or metal pipe to fit the diameter of the bearing race, to help seat the bearing/housing into place.
By now tho you probably have the job completed.

See the advice here: https://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Driveline.htm#CenterSupportBearingReplacement

You can always take it to a local auto machine shop and for just a few bucks have them replace the bearing.
