Chunks in the oil 120-130

Two years ago I put my 1968 220 into storage as I moved into a home with no garage, though I was planning to have one built. Everything was running smooth at that time. This past weekend I pulled the wagon out and moved it into the recently finished garage and started my restart process. I drained the oil, not too sludgy, but pretty black. When it was all drained I stuck my pinky finger into the drain and felt around for sludge. No sludge! but I did feel a few chunks. I managed to get a couple out and took a picture.


They are about the size of a grain of rice. I ran a magnet through the oil and didn't find any more than these, though they are only slightly magnetic.

So the question is, how much do I need to do? I had planned to flush a quart through the system then button up the bottom and add the full volume and idle the car till it is nice and warm and change the oil again. But if this is broken off of some critical part I don't want to make things worse.

Thoughts on what this was?

    Matt;

    "Sludge" (like the black cottage cheese found under valve covers years ago) does not occur in modern oils because they have detergents to keep things in suspension and able to get drained out at next change. Oil blackness does not occur as a result of storage.

    I'd clean those chips well, then subject them to a close inspection under a lupe...any machined surfaces? Crystalline structure? Fibers?

    Those look like timing gear teeth to me, though I wouldn't expect them to be attracted to a magnet.

    If you run the engine with a damaged timing gear, at some point, it will stop running; and it will stay not running until you replace the timing gear. Often, this failure does *not* cause damage to other parts.

    I'd loosen the bolts that secure the timing cover to the front of the engine and peek inside. Turn the engine over and look to see if there are damaged teeth on the gear. If so, replace.

    It's a bummer, but not really a huge deal.

      I agree with timing gear bits. And my guess is that they've been there since the last timing gear failure, before you owned the car.

      If it runs and is quiet, I'd guess that the timing gears was replaced after this happened.

        If the drain plug isn't magnetic, I'd get one, That's how I discovered the tranny in my SAAB 99 was about to self distruct.

          unless you have stuck your finger there before those bits may have been there for decades.....keep it simple, use the car, if it is something serious you will be rebuilding anyway.
