Did I index my wiper motor incorrectly? 200

Or, really what I'm asking is: "Did I screw up my wiper motor because I didn't bother indexing it before i reassembled it?"

The motor on my car started making the noise that is typical of separated magnets. I had a spare of unknown origin sitting around, but before I installed it I opened it up to take a look inside, at the magnets and electrical contacts. I think the rotor turned a bit as I put it back together.

Now, when I have the wipers set to intermittent, they run constantly, just like they were on low speed, and even when I shut them off they sometimes complete a few additional sweeps before stopping. Did I screw up how the motor is indexed, causing it not to park correctly, or is another cause more likely?

Did I index my wiper motor incorrectly? 200

I am having a similar issue with a motor I replaced last Summer. It was from the junkyard mine was still working but slow and noisey. Finally went magnets busted loose and it trashed motor. Took the donor motor apart and cleaned out all rust and re-assembled. It has been working great, fast and quiet until the other day. It will do a few intermittant wipes and then go like its on slow setting and it will not stop if I set the stalk to off until it feels like it. I have another relay so I tried it. Its does work better and turn off now but will still go into slow mode on intermittant setting. I have a ground strap from motor to strut tower as well. Very strange indeed. Puzzled here?

      Hi Joe,

I hesitate to post and lead you astray, but I had a very similar situation on an 88 sedan I acquired last summer. The wiper wouldn't shut down except by shutting off the car and I also had slow mode on intermittent setting. This condition existed when I got the car.

I swapped the motor and then the stalk without any change in behavior. I have a box of scavenged relays and the first one I tried didn't solve it but the second one did.

My memory's not the best, but I seem to remember that both the original and the first replacement relay had a different number from the one that worked.

Although they look the same, I think I decided that someone had replaced my sedan's relay with the rear one from a wagon.

I could be wrong, but you might want to check the numbers on yours.
