"How bad is it? "
I've not had the pleasure, but you can read many posts complaining.
The wiring used to reach the backup light switch on the top of the M47 has a high strand count to survive the flexing between the body and the transmission. The insulation attempted this flexibility too - it is silicone rubber. Unfortunately it did not last as long as the car did. So, you could do some digging in the archives, or maybe someone who's recently done it will see your post and tell you about whether you should patch it up with auto-store wire and auto-store crimp connectors or see about getting a genuine replacement harness. And if you think I'm recommending one or the other, I am not. Someone will always come along and tell you how they could have done it better than the engineers at Volvo. Or on the other hand, you might just crawl under there with a flashlight and mirror and decide you will invest in a bottle of liquid electrical tape. :-)

I'm reading a book about anti-gravity. I just can't put it down.
