Evaporator Question 200

Thanks for the help,I thought there was a replacement evaporator that was larger and would fit in the original housing with out all the changes that you would need to go to a 91+ setup.

Evaporator Question 200

Sure there is, but your question appeared to be about production years. The HCFC retrofit kit offered by Volvo has what you are looking for, but of course the evaporator is not bigger in dimension, only in thermal capacity.

Evaporator Question 200

I think it was 1990 but 1991 for sure. They kept R-12 until 1992.
R-12 became banned in '92 so the larger evaporator went in ahead of time because R-134 is 10% less efficient.

They did away with the Thermal Expansion Valve or TXV.

All the nineties went to a Clutch Cycling Orifice Tube, CCOT, system control using a low pressure switch in the accumulators. Cabin temperature is set by the pressure switch and fan speed by the occupants.

Easy to spot with the large aluminum can on the engine side firewall. It also has the dryer desiccant inside. It is considered a GM/Delco design.

Both H&L lines make connection in the engine compartment. Either to a solid line with the orifice or to the can for the return.

Phil
