still chasing low power/stumble 200 1989

89 245 auto 355k

couple issues

when floored it bogs and misfires/stumbles a bit. been chasing this low power, slow acceleration thing all fall/winter.
(new plugs, wire, cap, rotor, fpr. cleaned throttle body and amm and iac.)

also, when in park, if I step on brake hard rapidly multiple times it will want to almost stall or lower rpms way low.

fyi it has the classic uphill less than half tank stumble( in tank pump?) but, will also do it with more than half tank.( pumps run. jumpered both to hear)

still haven't checked out exhaust to see if that is plugged.
with warm weather returning ( sorry northeast)I can better look at some stuff outside.

any thoughts would be helpful

thats just it, no codes. if it did I could at least head in a direction.

cam timing check is beyond me I guess.

did I say this car has egr? cleaned all the grounds I could find.new fuel relay
and main pump last fall. rough idle also. seems to have power in first 2 gears then blah after.

seems like big vacuum leak, but I was/am off on hunt for what happened after that rattle of under car/exhaust after I went uphill last fall. it was/is leading me down a plugged cat/muffler trail I guess.with winter and no garage to work in, diagnosing took a halt for bit, car soldiering on every time to get me the 20 flat miles to work, coughing and spitting every now and then with no rhyme or reason.

luckily I have no hair to pull out

i'll get on looking for vac leaks this week.

45 and rain here in anchorage. go figure

The thing about the cam timing... you mentioned having a tbelt and tensioner done last spring. Reading your old thread, it looks to me like someone else is doing your work, right? Otherwise I'd ask you to be sure the tbelt did not slip or get put on a tooth off. It isn't hard, but it helps if you already have the experience of doing the tbelt replacement. That's cam timing, and it could be responsible for a sluggish car.

But the other things mentioned can be as well, such as a vacuum leak, clogged exhaust, or transmission kickdown or converter failure, especially that you say this happened since the transmission was changed. Another problem results when the flexplate (flywheel) is not reinstalled properly clocked. The ignition computer will try to make up for the error, but it won't make any power because it cannot advance the timing enough.

Seems like a trip back to the guy who swapped the tranny is needed.

The last poster has it right... Vacuum. It took me forever to find this problem on my 84. It was a broken vacuum line that runs under the front of the engine and couldn't be seen. Plugging the ports on the intake manifold was how I finally figured it out. Then I installed a new line that I rerouted so that it wouldn't be up against all of the engine heat. Shazam, runs like new.

Nothing in your post that does not occur when the fuel system is in limp home mode. Fill us in on the codes you've found and how a reset affects it. What is your oxygen sensor telling you about the mixture?

Last time you brought this up I asked you about cam timing. You gave no response.

    I'm thinking vacuum leak.

"if I step on brake hard rapidly multiple times it will want to almost stall or lower rpms way low."
    Possibly at booster.

Look for vacuum leaks by plugging off all possible sources of additional air into the intake manifold.
