...that do not know how to help themselves.

With everything I learned here I helped a young lady a couple of years ago when she was trying to sell her non-running 1993 240 sedan. The garage had given her bad info and she was clearly heartbroken about letting it go...I swapped parts with my 1990 until we found that it was power stage. She even changed it herself once the part came in.

Got a call from her today in a friends 240 wagon stranded on the side of the road. A few quick questions and I had it narrowed down to a fuel pump relay or the 25 amp fuse. It ended up the relay and they made a jumper wire to get them to a parts store a few miles away which happened to have a relay.

They made it to their gig with no issues and I got that warm fuzzy feeling of helping someone out. All because of this amazing community and all I learned from it.

Thanks!

My all-time favorite is the guy in Bogota, Colombia whose dealer told him his engine was blown in his 740 due to persistent oil leaks. Brickboard told him to change the flame trap. He did that, solved the problem, and drove away happy.

That's what makes this forum so nice. 10 years ago, I didn't know how to replace brake pads. My tools consisted of a screwdriver, hammer, and an adjustable wrench. Since buying my first Volvo 245, I can now tear it all apart and put it back together again.

Helping damsels in distress is a bonus!!

It really is not about me...it is about this community. Without the knowledge learned hear and repeated so many times to others, there is no way I could have done it.

OK then, I will join you. . .

I was able to replace my friend's broken door handle successfully after reading Art's "Volvo 240 Door Handle Repair" web page. On top of that, Dave/Volvo from Heck gave us a good used door handle for $5!!! She was so happy, you guys should have seen her. :) It was a really wonderful day for all of us. Thank you as always.

    Thanks for sharing that story!

We all wish to hear stories like that as we hope that we are doing the same.

To get remembered is a real bonus you deserved!

This story strikes a cord with me. I do the same thing in the off grid solar world, sometimes being able to trouble shoot things over the phone for people who are several states away.

This forum is very unusual and I hope people realize this. If you go looking for help on most forums you find mostly braggarts who are more interested in showing each other how smart they are than actually helping. Some are absolutely dangerous and dispense bad advice constantly. The off grid solar world is really bad. How would I know this? I have been kicked off of a couple of forums for pointing out the truth. This place is different. I constantly thank my lucky stars for it and wish I had found it BEFORE buying my old 84 244 Daisy instead of after. Oh well, hind sight. Thanks to everybody, especially Art.

Common sense is now recognized as a super power.

I spend less time on this board than I used to by far. The main reason for that is how much time I spend on the 24 Hours of LeMons (one of my three hobbies). Their community is much like this but with intentional bad car decisions, more beer, bacon in mass quantities and people I not only meet in real life, but spend 3, 4-day weekends a year with.

After people stop looking at me funny when I explain what I do for fun, I tell them it is all about the community. They are much more confused after that.

Each race, I spend 4'ish hours driving, about 2 hours in "reserve" stuck in the paddock, and the rest of it stumbling around the paddock checking if folks need anything. This is all assuming I am not spending hours under my own car. I am a poor to average driver, better than average organizer/cat herder, good mechanic but awesome scavenger.
