93 Volvo 240 Sedan - Folding Down Rear Seats? 200 1993

I have the above car that I bought from a Volvo dealer who bought it from Hertz (the car was a rental). I have owned the car since 1994 and love it.

Are there any kits that I can buy to enable me to fold down the rear seat and enlarge the trunk?

133K miles and running strong!!!!

This is exactly why the 240 wagons are so great and versatile. So much storage available when the rear seat is folded down.

No, as others have explained.

However that is not saying, "it can't be done". 240s have seen lots of modifications. Perhaps someone has tried moving the wagon rear seat over to the sedan and found it couldn't be done or could be. Don't know. Maybe one day, I'll try.

I totally understand that the bulk head is part of the structure of the sedan and I do not want to do anything stupid.

By the way, I do have a hole in the center (but no bag) that allows a set of skis to pass through.

Since my car was in the Hertz lease program and it has minimal frills, I assumed that a Volvo designed to be sold directly to a consumer would have the fold down seat option.

Do ANY 240 sedans have a rear seat that folds down to enlarge the size of the trunk?

I'm just curious -- where did you get this idea? I know that some hatchbacks can do this (e.g., my daughter's Volvo S60 can do it, but it's generations apart from the 240 and has no bulkhead behind the rear seat), but they're an entirely different kind of car. Why do you think a 240 can?

I in essence assumed that the 240 had this feature available in certain packages, but mine did not since it was designed for the rental market (Hertz). A folding seat is so common, but I saw the post that said the 240 was designed in an era when this was not a common feature.

Happy new year!!!!

Actually, a very large percentage of the cars from Europe designed in late 70's and 80's or later have it. The back half of our 240's were designed in the 1960's so it was only common in wagons and hatchbacks at that time.

There is a protective bulkhead behind the passenger seat ... 200 1993

There is a structural bulkhead behind the rear seat. Wagons, lacking this, have different structural members in the roof and C pillar (and maybe the floor pan) to provide the same function.

The sedan only has a pass-through -- designed primarily as a "ski tunnel", I've also used it to carry some lumber and even a few 8-ft fluorescent lights.

You should not even consider modifying that bulkhead. Besides, it wouldn't help to lower the seats -- you'd have to find some way to install the wagon's rear seat back, and even then I doubt that there's enough room to lower it rearward (its folding will probably be blocked by the rear window) -- certainly it can't be folded forward because of the thickness of the seat bottom.

If you need the room and folding rear seat back, you'll need to buy a wagon.

The bulkhead behind the seats is a structural part of the car so any modification to it would compromise the strength. Some other makes have a hole in the centre with a bag that allows a set of skis to come through above the armrest. If well engineered with suitable strengthening of the bulkhead that could be done I guess, but I doubt if that is enough for you. Looks like you will have to buy a Wagon too.

My 82 242 has the pass-through for skis, etc. from the factory. Fold the rear arm rest down, lift up the fiber-board flap in the trunk (velcro holds it shut) and you can pass a few long objects through. No "bag" for the dirty/wet stuff though. Reckon that bulkhead was designed to add structural strength with the 'hole' in the middle.
