Rear axle plug question? 900 1997

Hola,

I have a 97, 960 in which I like to change the rear axle oil.

I took a quick look at the plug and it makes me wonder weather I have

enough room to pull the plug out. I squirted some PB blaster and left

it alone.

Thanks

I went through the same process, and decided to hire my local independent to do it. If you pull one of the wheels you can see it pretty well. I used Redline synthetic. I didn't see a practical way to get to it without having the car on a rack. Some people use a vacuum extractor like the one in the link below. I have used it to suck the oil from the dipstick tube to the transmission.

The plug is deep on the axle cage.

I am going to try and removed it. If I fail, I can always put it back.

Here is a link to a post by daidnik with a detailed description of how to do it.

I never worked on a 960, but even if IRS, I'd guess there is either a plug, which is just a short threaded piece that will need hardly any room at all or worse case you just undo a lower bolt on the cover, again, not much room required. But, maybe I'm missing something
