Most sensible way to swap in a new cam, new hushers, and adjust the lash? 200 1991

I'll be putting a VX can in my '91 245SE, so I'll be adjusting the valves as needed at the same time. I also want to install new hushsers while I'm in there.

As I understand it, you can't really get accurate measurements for valve lash with brand new hushers, so it's best to take measurements before putting them in. But since I'll be installing a new cam all together that method doesn't really work for me.

Is there a better/faster/more-sensible way to do this than:
1- Remove old cam
2- Install new cam
3- Take measurements
4- Remove new cam
5- Install hushers & shims
6- Reinstall new cam

Thanks

Hi,

Yes that's the way, you have to mount the cam 2x. Btw I've checked my VX lash after 50k km installed with new hushers last time and here's what I found. Of all the eight hushers, one started to disintegrate.

I took out all the hushers and its not too noisy with tight lash (stone cold - in 0.35mm / out 0.35mm).

Amarin.

Thanks for the info. Were the hushers that you installed Genuine Volvo, or aftermarket?

It was genuine Volvo #113329 from IPD. Looks to me like they should at least be replaced with each timing belt change. A bit concerned the pieces could end up at the oil pickup mesh.

Amarin.

Hrm, that's disappointing to hear. I was looking forward to quieting down at least some of the noise this old engine makes, even though most of it is piston slap.

Epic2112 wrote -- "But since I'll be installing a new cam all together that method doesn't really work for me." -- It has to -- unless you have a tool that compresses the shim buckets with the cam in place -- but then you'd have to account for the fresh hushers which keep the bucket from direct contact with the valve stem. What it seems you really mean is you don't want to have to be bothered to mount the cam twice. Sorry to disappoint you. In all it's not a big deal anyway. Happy Holidays -- Dave

That is in fact exactly what I meant. I was just being lazy and looking for a shortcut.

Thanks!
