oil consumption 900 1997

I just finished a 3000 mile round trip in the 97 960 with 195k miles. Most of the trip was run at 80+mph and at least 5 hours of the run around 90mph when we got back to Texas. RPMs were sustained at 3000 to 3400. The engine consumed 1 qt. each way. Is this acceptable on the Volvo six cylinder or is it indicative of internal wear?

Thanks,

excessive oil consumption is considered at 500 miles or less. 2 qts in 3400 miles is not enough to worry about. if the oil was changed right before the trip, i'm just a little suprised-not concerned. if no oil change before, than you're burning out the short trip crap that collects in the oil when it can't heat up. again, no worries. which is why it's 3 mos. or 3000 miles. good luck, chuck.

Thanks for the info. I changed the oil the day before and ran it for 17 hours on the first qt. Ditto for the return trip. I used to run street rods that would burn a qt every 500 miles and never thought a thing about it. Times certainly change.

      Merry Christmas!

Also, 90 MPH? That would cause some extra oil consumption!

90 mph is only about 3300 rpm on the six cylinder. That is just halfway through the range and well under the power curve. These cars were designed for high speed travel in Europe, and Texas is a good place to let it run. We have 70 mph speeds on the secondary roads and 80 on the freeway. :)
