Door Liner 200 1981

When it rains, the driver's door panel is getting wet along the bottom 8" and the rear floor is wet.

No water around the edge of the door or body except at the bottom. With the panel off, and after raining, I see some runs near the openings on the inner sheet metal.

Passenger door does not have the problem. How is the plastic door liner installed and what version is best? I have some plastic sheeting to make a liner.

Car is a 1981 242DL and has 4 year old outside window scrapers that now have a 1/4" gap at each end.

I don't remember what the original paper liner looked like on my 242. I have a full plastic liner which somehow allows water to leak onto the floor along the door.

From the pictures I'm thinking the secret may be tucking the liner into the holes. I've cut flaps in the plastic for each hole.

Do as Art says!

Also:
- verify the door drains are clear.
- clean all crap from the door bottom
- verify all parts are secured.
- Lubricate all in need.

The door handle machine bolts can come loose and may need tightening.

As for Window scrapers for your awesome 242, the best 240 in existance, and i want one .... well, Window scrapers. Specifically, 242 neoprene (or poron?) Window scraper. Superior to anything rubber.

This could be a great thread, because I suspect a lot of thought has already been given this in our Volvo community.

Here's what the paper looked like on the good side of our 242. You ask which version is best? Which version? You might study your passenger side to satisfy yourself you understand each feature of the vapor barrier before marking up the plastic for cutting.

My exchange of paper for plastic involved a bit of winging it where the shape was involved, as the paper is difficult to remove in one piece for a template, where it hasn't already disintegrated. Kinda wish I would have snapped a photo of the plastic I used in the 2-door, but by that time I'd done it already on a sedan.

I've never felt comfortable with my understanding of the drainage from the wet side of the door panel vapor barrier. It is tucked in at the bottom, but portions where the inner panel is not open are not sealed. It seemed to be improved when the paper was replaced with plastic, but I suspect that occurred after the last of the 242's were built. Here's how Volvo did it later, with plastic.

Attaching the vapor barrier to the inner door panel is one of the places you get to use duct tape on a Volvo and feel right about it.

www.davebarton.com should be able to supply you with the stuff need to replace your window scrapers.

I made replacement door card liners out of heavy mil leaf/lawn trash bags. I 'attached' them to the back of the cards by simply pushing the plastic card attachment pins through the plastic. Once the card was in place I poked other holes through the plastic to allow for the various screws, clips, window crank spline, etc. that needed to pass through.
