All it takes is a "passing of one foot" between the seats of a twenty pound child or a standing dog and their done!
On the '86, there are two phillips headed screws located to the lower left and right at the rear of the console.
You will see them from the outside but they are recessed into little cups. You might want to move the seats forward on their rails but it's not absolutely necessary.
Have the emergency seat handle pulled up a little bit.
The whole unit will then lift and move forward about an inch. It unhooks itself from a clip located at the front center.
You will have to remove the ashtray and work the "wire/bulb housing" of the seat belt warning light. The light itself will come out of its snapped in position also.
The white rear floor lamp lens will also have to be push out and it's wire removed.
Once you get the back end up high enough you can reach the heat seater switches connectors.
Everything is unplug and replug later going back.
Lots of luck finding a console that has not been busted though.
Save the old pieces so if you find a good one use it to glue pieces under the top of the new one. It helps to reinforce the sides and top.
Better yet make a supporting metal brace, if you have the time.
Console's that had one of Volvo's lousy, fold down, cup holding armrests seem to be beefed up underneath for supporting the armrest, that is, if you can find one of those intact. Even Most of armrests those have broken sliders or are ripped out internally from its foam.
If you can buy a new one it will not be as cheap as its built. Last ones I saw ran $60 retail.
I decided I liked wearing my undershorts!
If, I go to a dealer anymore, I try not to wear white socks, just in case!
