How do you remove the parking brake center console? 200

Hi guys...

The center console, (the one that covers the parking brake and holds the ashtray for the rear passenger compartment), has been broken to bits.
I'm assuming that one of my daughters or their friends decided this was a quick way into the back seat.

I need to replace it but I can really see what I need to do to get the old one out and the new one in. Do the front seats have to be removed?

Oh, this is on a 1986 244 GL.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it.

All it takes is a "passing of one foot" between the seats of a twenty pound child or a standing dog and their done!

On the '86, there are two phillips headed screws located to the lower left and right at the rear of the console.

You will see them from the outside but they are recessed into little cups. You might want to move the seats forward on their rails but it's not absolutely necessary.

Have the emergency seat handle pulled up a little bit.
The whole unit will then lift and move forward about an inch. It unhooks itself from a clip located at the front center.

You will have to remove the ashtray and work the "wire/bulb housing" of the seat belt warning light. The light itself will come out of its snapped in position also.
The white rear floor lamp lens will also have to be push out and it's wire removed.

Once you get the back end up high enough you can reach the heat seater switches connectors.

Everything is unplug and replug later going back.

Lots of luck finding a console that has not been busted though.

Save the old pieces so if you find a good one use it to glue pieces under the top of the new one. It helps to reinforce the sides and top.
Better yet make a supporting metal brace, if you have the time.

Console's that had one of Volvo's lousy, fold down, cup holding armrests seem to be beefed up underneath for supporting the armrest, that is, if you can find one of those intact. Even Most of armrests those have broken sliders or are ripped out internally from its foam.

If you can buy a new one it will not be as cheap as its built. Last ones I saw ran $60 retail.

I decided I liked wearing my undershorts!
If, I go to a dealer anymore, I try not to wear white socks, just in case!

😬

Phil

Phil....

That was exactly the information I was looking for. Thanks!

As for finding a used one I don't think that's going to happen. I've looked in the past and most are not usable.

I've found some new replacements but they are all in the $100.00 range now. That's pretty pricey but I'm trying to get the car ready for my soon to be 16 year old daughter. I'm sure she would be happier if the console wasn't busted.

I've also noticed that IPD sells a kit that basically glues on, over the old console. In my opinion that might be the best route to go, (since it should make the console stronger), but that kit would be closer to $130.00 for both pieces.

I guess I'll decide what to do after I get everything mechanically sound. I still have to swap out the cluster, install a new windshield wiper motor and repair the sunroof. The heater control valve also needs replaced but I think I'm going to let my mechanic tackle that particular job. My old body just doesn't like laying in a floorboard as much as it used to.

Thanks again for the information. I'm going to email your response to myself so that I have it as a reference.

Boy, those all sound like father/daughter projects to me. "Here honey, your used car...now tell me what weekend you want me to help you fix the broken bits." Depending on the personality, she may hate you now but you will have taught her a valuable skill. She will also have a vested interest in keep the car whole.

hi onkel-- you make a good point. back during the war, daughter helped me change out a clutch in a 77 rwd dodge.(wow who can remember how easy changing rwd clutches was- not like the hellonarox nightmares in these high smelling fwd cars) . she fought like a wet hornet, but did a good job. thanked me a lot for the education she acquired not only in mechanicals but also for the new language she learned. regards oldduke

Remove the ashtray I believe there are 2 screws under it and the whole unit will slide forward.
