Replacement Transmission Q's ('92 960) 900 1992

The transmission on our 1992 960 has been causing problems for a long time and no attempts to fix it have really worked out very well so I'm starting to look into a replacement. I see both the same and similar years for sale online but what should I be looking for?

I plan on also replacing the PNP, but should I also try and replace the transmission controller with one from the same year as the new one or does it not matter?

Any tips for doing the job? I assume the car will need to be higher in the air than what ramps can do. Not looking forward to that part.

Replacement Transmission Q's ('92 960) 900 1992

Hello, Just find a low mileage tranny from any year 960 or s-90, v-90. They all work. The NSS can be taken apart and cleaned. I use 1500 wet sandpaper and make the little contacts flat again. I clean out all the old grease and use a good silicone grease or dielectric grease for all the moving parts. Transmission should be drained, converter drained, use grey silicone for the pan gasket and refill with a good dextron three with a pint bottle of red lube guard. Wait until the transmission is warmed up and check fluid and top off to hot mark. Before hooking up cooler lines run a quart of clean fluid through to flush cooler, just in case any debris from old tranny is inside. In 18 years I have only seen 1 controller go bad and it had corrosion on the connectors which interrupted a ground path.

Thanks. I have already cleaned the PNP once that way but it still acts odd from time to time. May have another go at it, at least it's easy to access.

I read the FAQ but one question it didn't answer was how high up the car has to be lifted for the transmission to clear the car? My jack stands have a range up to 21", is that enough?
