re: 87 245 auto - power steering pump going bad? 200 1987

Hi All,

I know. . . I have one problem after another. :D

OK, I did some research here. This is current symptom that I am having. I hear screeching sound when the car is cold. It sounds like my belt is slipping. It happens every other day since last week. Only when I am turning either direction at low speed from stop. Is my power pump going south? If so, how much time do I have left? How do I know for sure it's the pump? If the pump is bad, why it's making that noise?

Here is what I have done or know so far.

1. all new v belts and they are tensioned correctly.
2. my accessory bushings are good and all alignments are true.
3. harmonic balancer is good.
4. just replaced power steering fluid with Mobil1 synthetic trans fluid using a turkey baster method, it wasn't too dirty. I am hoping to get rid of that sound.

Thank you as always.

      Hi All,

It looks like it failed to upload my videos. You can go to my photo bucket account and see the videos. The sound quality has been altered after the up load but you can listen to first few seconds on both videos.

      Thank you as always.

    re: update 200 1987

    Hi All,

Since the posting, I put about 34,000 miles on it. Currently, it has more than 281,500 miles on the odometer which is not true mileage. The pump was making a grinding noise and was getting louder. I decided to take an advantage of the warm temperature and changed the pump over the weekend. Prior to swapping the pump, I did flush the system using Mobil 1 Syn Trans fluid.

I borrowed a set of steering removal/installer tool from Autozone. It wasn't in a great condition but I was able to complete the job. My original plan was to use my 2 arms jaw puller and hammer the pulley back in the stud. I am glad that I didn't do that.

I put 2 layers of large plastic bags to catch the fluid. The low pressure hose came off easily after removing the high pressure line first.

See my video on the next thread, it may take a day or so to upload. Thank you as always.

update - missing power steering pump bolt 200 1987

    Hi All,

It looks like I am missing a fastener here. I tried to use a bolt and a wing nut that I have in my tool box but it was too small and couldn't hold with enough strength.

By any chance, does anyone know the exact size and length? I tired to look on the web but it looks like they no longer have diagram parts listing. Thank you as always.

    re: 87 245 auto - power steering pump going bad? 200 1987

It sure sounds like a belt slipping.

Hydraulic pumps usually make a growling or groaning noise when they go bad (bearings), or they just don't put out as much pressure (wear or pressure relief springs). They run in oil so the pumps last a long time.

Any chance your new belt is too narrow? Do you still have the old belt ? If so you could sub it in and see if the noise changes.

      quick note to Greg/riverband 200 1987

      Hi Greg,

I forgot to mention. The water pump belts were too loose, especially the one that's closer to the engine block. It's running good without any noise for now.

      Thank you!

      Hi Greg,

OK, I will take that over a bad pump.

Yes, I still have the old belts, they have acceptable cracks but I decided to change them anyway. I compared them side by side, all belts are correct width and length. But then again, I told that you my belt tensions were correct. :-) I am not too sure about the length since I compared them visually.

I am trying to figure out which belt is loose. Is there any trick to isolate the problem? Spray water maybe?

      Thank you as always.
